Question My PC seem to cap the internet speed on 10-12 Mbits/s

Hey, recently I've changed my internet provider, and I went from 20 Mbits/s to 100 Mbits/s, so the download speed should be around 10-12 MB/s, which works fine on all my other devices where I measure this exact speed. But my main computer somehow stays at 10-12 Mbits/s and can't get over this limit. When I tested it on the Google speed test, I measured 10-12, and when I try to actually download something, the speed is around 1500 kb/s, which is the same as my old internet.

I am using a wireless Wi-Fi adapter from TP-Link, purchased a few days ago, so it's very new and supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with a max speed of 433 Mbits/s. However, I also tried two other adapters, and the problem remained the same. I also tried an Ethernet cable, and it was the same, so it’s not an issue with the adapters being slow or something.

I manually installed the driver for the USB network adapter, as it comes with it on the USB disk; when you plug it in, you just click on setup, and it installs itself. So, I have the driver installed, and it doesn’t seem to show any old drivers in Device Manager. I tried resetting the network settings, deleting all the Wi-Fi networks from my computer, restarting it, and reconnecting. The issue remains the same. I also tried booting Windows from a different HDD, and the issue was still present. However, I should mention that this Windows installation was used, not a fresh copy, so there were some old files and drivers, so I’m not sure if this was a fully reliable test.

I’ve watched many tutorials on how to fix this, but nothing I tried worked yet.

It just seems that something in my PC is capping the speed at 10-12 Mbits/s. I also tested the adapters on another PC, and they worked well, so I don’t know why it’s not working on this one. Maybe some old settings from the old Wi-Fi stayed in the PC, but I’m not sure, since I reset the network settings.

Does anyone have any clue what this could be?

PC:

MB: Asrock Z690 PG Riptide
GPU: rx590 AMD
CPU: i9 14900K
RAM: Kingston 32 GB 3200 mhz
SSD: Samsung 870 QVO SATA 2.5

Ensure that only one network adapter is enabled on the PC. Not wired and wireless adapters enabled at the same time.

Compare the network adapter's configuration settings to another computer that is working "at speed". Look for differences: be sure to compare wired to wired or wireless to wireless.

Run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) via the Command prompt and post the full results.

You should be able to copy the full results and post the results here with no need to retype everything.

And also compare the results to another computer that is working at speed.

Not seeing anything directly amiss via the ipconfig results.

There are three things that may need to be addressed but no immediate concern....

For future reference:

Disable IPv6
Change the DNS Servers to Google at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Increase the lease times from 2 hours to at least a week (168 hours). Technically not an issue per but can be problematic for some networks.

Hold on those for now.

= = = =

Where is the D-Link Wi-Fi adapter plugged into the PC? Some back USB port perhaps?

In any case, first try using a known working USB extension cable to raise the Wi-Fi adapter up and away from the PC. Doing so may improve the adapter's ability to transmit (critical) and to receive. Plus keep the adapter cooler - which is also important. Those small adapters can and do tend to get warm and even hot to the touch. Especially when nearing failure.

= = = =

Regarding the "low speed" PC and its adapter:

D-Link DWA-171 AC600 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi USB Adapter

Is the adapter's Speed&Duplex set to Auto?

FYI:

https://www.solveyourtech.com/how-t...ink Speed: Select desired speed from dropdown.

First, just look and compare the settings between the "low speed" PC and the "right speed" PC.

Look for any differences. There are many, many configuration settings.

Most settings should be left alone/as is unless there is some specific reason to make a change.

If, while looking, you believe that you accidently changed something, just cancel.

Post what you find.

Thank you for the answer, I don't think there is any problem with the adapter since it's working normally on the other computer and it's working the same even with ethernet cable.

Also for the DNS for google, it's this low speed on every browser, microsoft edge, google, opera, so I wouldn't say that I should focus on google

The adapter doesn't have the option to set for speed and duplex (attaching an image)

Also tried disabling IPv6 and the issue remained the same

The USB is connected from back of the PC, and I've already tried every possible slot

Okay I have update what I've realized just now, the speed is bad only on browsers, but any type of browser, but normally the speed is good (for example when I tried some steam or other game launchers, the games are downloading in the right speed, so the problem is only with browsers)

Maybe this could lead you in the right way?

Thanks

Speed and Duplex: apologies - drifted off course a bit.

The objective being to compare the wireless properties of the "right" PC to the "low" PC.

Vlastnost = Property. Correct?

Check each property and look for any that do not match or are other than expected.

= = = =

Both PC's are using the router as the DNS server.

Google's DNS Servers are a much better option. And there are other options available.

FYI (and you can easily find other similar links and explanations):

https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-and-why-to-change-your-dns-server

As for connecting to the USB ports - indeed trying all of them would be part of the troubleshooting effort.

However, the use of a USB extension cable is to move the wireless adapter up and away from those ports. Which often can improve performance.

That all said it appears that the question has changed to "why slow only when using a browser.? .....

Yes: look at the AV software - if any.

In addition, you can use Task Manager and Resource Monitor to observe system performance with respect to browsing and not-browsing. Plus you have an advantage where one PC is "low" and the other PC is "right".

What you look for is something that is running on the "low" PC but not on the "right" PC. Or vice versa.

Could be, for example, some extension or even some app being launched at startup (Task Manager) or later triggered (Task Scheduler) when a browser is opened.
