I built my gaming pc 14 months ago. It has been running good. Last week I smelled an odor like burning plastic. My Corsair power supply was hot to the touch. Bought a new Thermaltake Smart 650 power supply at Best Buy. The pc would not boot with the new power supply. The lights on the motherboard came on for a second then went out. I returned the power supply and got another. Driving home I realized that I may have a short that causes the new supply to stop and the Cosair to overheat.
The pc wouldn't boot with the second new power supply. I tried to remove my gpu and broke the mount on the motherboard. So I bought a MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard. I installed the new board and it won't boot with the new power supply. I tried to boot with only the CPU and GPU connected. It won't boot the the Thermaltake power supply and will boot with the Cosair. The fans on the gpu, cpu, power supply and case are all working. It has been running for 15 minutes and the power supply is only slightly hot and there is a burning plastic odor.
Could a short be causing this issue? Could it be the case? I only have the case and gpu to replace.
