Hi im 14 and i just built my first pc 6months ago and by built i bought a pre built system and today got a new gpu. Sadly my psu which is a 500w gamemax psu blew up while running my rx 580 8gb. There was smoke, two loud pop noises and then quickly i turned of power. I tried to turn it on again with no success as it is completely dead. Is my gpu dead? i spent 190$ on it and im really scared that i just lost my money as the gpu was hot.
i dont know all my specs but:
An Asrock Motherboard
ryzen 5 2400g
amd rx 580 8gb
8gb ddr4 2400mhz ram (team vulcan)
1TB HD
N my now fried 500w psu
please anyone help

Did you have a warranty for your pc parts? I'd try to cash that in first, if that doesn't work, it's best not to tamper with the internals unless your VERY experienced. Try and speak to a professional.

Gamemax PSU is dead for sure.

About rest of your pc - could be also dead motherboard, HDD, GPU.
You have to replace the

You have to replace the psu and check it.
tomorrow imma check with an older psu i have it not strong enough for my gpu but if the psu works n my pc turns on i think the psu should also work

okie thank you, i didnt think it would blow up 🙁 but imma purchase an evga 650 or 550w psu next as i dont want anything bad happening

theres a difference and the wattage doesn't matter. also bronze or platinum doesn't matter thats just an efficiency label. compare it to the swiss a b c d e f label.

read reviews, if you want something good go for the seasonic focus series, and about 550w.

This is the wrong attitude to have here. PC building is not that complicated and this site is geared specifically to help people NOT need very experienced professionals to get their systems working.

He has a junk PSU and it failed, simple problem, hopefully the protections saved the rest of the system. Need to replace the PSU with a good one to find out.

Yup, you'll know better what's going on after you have a working PSU in there, no way to tell yet. It's why we always stress to builders the important of not going cheap on the PSU to save a few bucks; for a lot of people, a safety part isn't as much fun as something that makes the PC more powerful. For now, hope for the best is all you can do!

Hopefully you have a warranty, a lot of SI's cheap out on their PSU's making the PC barley work in the first place, let alone upgrading. Worst case scenario with your PSU blowing up is that your GPU and Motherboard may both be dead along with your PSU. I'd recommend getting a Seasonic 550w + PSU, and it wouldn't be bad to invest in 80+ Gold or higher efficiency.

Unfortunately, his warranty won't cover parts he adds to the PC. Definitely a cheapo, garbagey PSU though!

This has happened to me too after buying a Sapphire RX 580 4GB because i found it pretty cheap brand new , i quickly went to buy some chinese PSU (Spacer was the name of the brand) it lasted for a week then all of a sudden while playing Witcher 3 it popped and smoke started coming out of it , i quickly removed it as fast as possible , removed all the cables from the PC , put in the old PSU then i started the PC saw that everything was fine since nothing else besides the PSU broke , went back to the old PSU and GPU and waited a couple weeks for my new PSU to arrive , i bought a Be Quiet! Pure Power 11 600W , been using it for 3 months with the RX 580 and everything is fine , i sent the PSU that blew up to warranty , got it back and had it in a bag ever since , never gonna touch that again in my life , if you were unlucky and any parts broke try your luck with the warranty but speak truthfully.

heyy i plugged in my old psu to everything but my actual gpu cuz it cant handle it and the pc powered on! so my mother board n 1TDHD is alivee 😀 i couldnt be happier, all i need to do is buy a new psu and we will be
all good!
