My router is using the wrong Ipv4 address

For some reason my Netgear router is providing me with an ipv4 address that is similar to the gateway address. I believe that is usually caused by being behind more than one router but I am not.. My setup is simply the cable line going into my non-wireless modem, the ethernet cable goes from my modem into my router, and then the router gives a wireless signal to all our devices.

For example my ipv4 address is 10.0.0.4 and my gateway is 10.0.0.1. If i connect the computer straight to the modem without using my router then the IP is fine and goes back to its normal external IP.

This is very frustrating because it is preventing me from port forwarding. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or know if it is possible to port forward while the address is messed up like this? I am using a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router with a generic TP-Link modem.

I'll post an image of what I am seeing from ipconfig /all in the command box Imgur link

Your router shouldn't list the external IP address for a device connected to it. If it does, then it isn't acting like a a router. Only one device can have the external IP address from most ISPs. The router claims that address and translates the LAN addresses and WIFI to that one external IP address. Your router is acting correctly IMO. If you are trying to port forward, then you probably should set a static IP address for the device you are trying to forward to.
Have you read the knowledge base -- http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24289/~/how-do-i-set-up-port-forwarding-on-my-nighthawk-router%3F?cid=wmt_netgear_organic
You've set your router up as a sub-network, not as a part of the main network.

If you want to set up the router to serve WIFI to your main network, it needs to be configured like this (assuming your on a 192.168.1.1 main network for examples)

primary gateway IP of main network: 192.168.1.1

router IP: 192.168.1.2 (set to static)
router subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
router default gateway: 192.168.1.1

You can still port-forward with your current setup if you want, you'll just need to forward from your primary network (ex. 192.168.1.1) one more layer down to the 10.0.0.1 sub-network.

Sure. My cable line goes directly into my TP-Link modem. From there an ethernet cord goes directly from the modem into my R7000 wireless router and that is where the wireless internet signal my PC connects to comes from. That's all there is in my network. I no longer use any ISP provided equipment because I bought my own modem so i could send theirs back and not pay any more lease fees each month

After doing a reset on the router and doing ipconfig /all here is the updated information. it is now a 192.168 address like it should be BUT the ipv4 address also changed to that as well. Imgur link

Let me know if you would like to see a screenshot of my router settings 🙂

Is your TP-Link just a modem, or a modem/router combo? If it only has one ethernet output then it is a modem if it has multiple, then it is a modem/router combo. IF your TP-Link is a modem/router combo, then you want to configure the R7000 as an access point (AP) rather than a router. Everything you have posted so far sounds like the router is doing what it should do. Providing you an IP address in the same subnet as your gateway (the R7000). If you want the IP address to be provided by the TP-Link then you need to configure the R7000 as an access point -- Here is the STICKY to do that http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/36406-43-convert-wireless-router-wireless-access-point

It is just a modem. Just one slot for Ethernet and no wireless connectivity. If I log into the modem's page it has no options I can change or edit - just a bunch of information about the connection. I had a different modem hooked up until recently (that was supplied by my ISP) and I was experiencing the same issues so I'm not sure if the modem has anything to do with my problems.

I'm not sure what to do about my router. It used to list my actual external IP address as the ipv4 but since it changed to that weird IP i'm unable to port forward. My internet works fine other than that. Do you have any suggestions on getting my port forwarding to work?

EDIT: heres some info. The IP issues were triggered when I installed the last modem that my ISP sent me which was a router/modem combo. I'm not sure if that changed any of my routers settings when I did that or not.. I have tried reseting my router to factory defaults and reinstalling it after I replaced that modem with my current TP-Link modem so I would think that would fix the issue if it had to do with my router but nothing changed. If i hook my computer into my modem directly then my IP shows as my actual external IP and everything works, yet if afterwards I hook my router up then it reverts back to this issue. I'm really stumped on this haha

Oh and I have no idea what turning my router into an AP does. Would it help anything even if I do not have a modem/router combo?

Oh wow... um. Yes I have read the knowledge base and port forwarded correctly to the right local IP address. I have been confusing myself over one thing that I have been reading wrong and I just now realized it. After doing a few more tweaks and giving the modem and router a reset I managed to get everything working. I really appreciate you trying to help kanewolf! Next time I work on computer issues I'll make sure I'm not sleep deprived like I am now haha. I hope you have a great day and thanks again! It means a lot that you take the time to help everyone :) even dummies like myself!
