Any games that run under unreal engine provide an error message of D3D missing (i will put error message into the answers) if the game does not run unreal it will go black screen and then to desktop or need manually restarting. This issue is getting really on my nerves now ive looked at the dirext x software its all up to date. Ive completely uninstalled the newest drivers and reinstalled them. Ive rolled back the drivers. I have had a fresh install of windows and checked my RAM and hard drive none of which did anything. My GPU sits around 73 Celsius whilst gaming so it is not overheating. Im getting down to the point of thinking about switching to NVIDIA because nobody seems to have any answers as to why this problem persists. Any help would be appreciated (any at all) Thankyou!

This is the error message for Unreal:
Fatal error: [File😀 :\Jenkins\workspace\DBD_Boreal\UnrealEngine\Engine\Source\Runtime\Windows\D3D11RHI\Private\D3D11Util.cpp] [Line: 176]
Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost. (Error: 0x887A0006 - 'HUNG'

This looks more like a hardware issue, specifically a PSU issue. EVGA W1 is not exactly the best PSU around - depending on its age and quality of that specific sample, it might simply lack the power on 12V rail. Can you test with a more powerful PSU? If that's not possible, try testing the card in a different rig which has a better quality PSU (Seasonic, XFX, Antec HCG, EVGA B2/G2/G3 and so on, 550W+).

Im not really able to try my card in another rig or use a different psu but just checked when the psu was issued and it was 21 of november 2013 if that helps?

Impossible to tell precisely, but it is certainly not as good as it was at the date of purchase. Components degrade with time, and high ambient temperatures also have a high impact. If you cannot replace the PSU and cannot test the card in a different rig, you will have to do whatever it takes to either reduce the load on the PSU and/or reduce ambient temperatures.

Try the following:
- use A/C and reduce ambient temps to no more than 25C
- clean the PC from dust; blow out any dust from the PSU with a compressed-air can (do not open the PSU!)
- open the side panel of the case and leave it that way for testing
- remove any overclocks on the GPU if they are present
- limit framerate in AMD drivers to 60 fps (FRTC - frame rate target control) - this will reduce power consumption

You might have some luck with the above, try everything. But it would still be the best to test with a better quality PSU.

Sorry but what is A/C? (im not amazing with computers)
The pc was cleared of dust when i took it to the pc shop
Ive never OC my pc
I already limited the framerate yesterday. it worked right for 3 games but then went back to normal

A/C is air conditioner, if you have one.

Well, if framerate limiting helped in 3 games, then it is almost certain that the PSU is to blame. It went back to "normal" later because the power consumption is most likely borderline.

Try reducing the power limit of the GPU to -20%.

Other than that, nothing much you can do here. A new PSU is the cure 😉

my power has just been set to -20 ill try that and if that doesnt work ill just get a new psu whats the best quality one that would fit my build money isnt to much of an issue £60-70 is probably most ill pay

also my power limit was on 0 when the problem started, then i changed it to 50% instead of -50% could this of been causing it?

By putting it to +50% you allowed your card to use much more power, so yes, this could have pronounced the problem even more. You need to reduce the power consumption, not increase it. The PSU likely works at the border even without that 😉

As for the suitable PSU suggestions, any of the tier 1 and 2 PSUs having a 550W+ rating from the following list will do:

www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

well i put it to -20 and it crashed in the game lobby going to try it at -50 if that does nothing then a new psu is being ordered

It would still be the best thing to do regardless of what happens - even if you manage to stabilise it, this will yield reduced performance due to lower power consumption limit. And your PSU is out of warranty anyway (only 3 years warranty). A better model is certainly advised.

i only bought the psu half a year ago i was saying the first version of my psu was released on 21/11/13

what would happen if i put a 750w in? im leaning towards EVGA Supernova B2 Super Flower would that be fine or would it use to much power (this is why im no good at computer hardware)

PSUs do not use power, they provide it. And they only provide as much as the components require. This EVGA is an excellent quality PSU. 750W is not really needed, a good 550W+ PSU is all you need unless you intend to use multiple GPUs. In other words, you will be overpaying for something you won't be using. Other than that, no harm in doing so.

As a sidenote, you are likely eligible for a RMA of your PSU if it is only half a year old. Consider that first before purchasing a new one. It is not really a great quality, but it should be able to handle the RX480 fine if everything is functioning correctly.

im thinking about maybe upgrading my rig so multiple graphics cards could be an option in the future so i might just pay the £75 that seems reasonable but the problem seems to be sorted for 2 games now ill play for the rest of the day and see if it comes back, one question though? how come not getting enough power to the gpu would be causing it to present a D3D error? i dont understand other than that thankyou for all your help

If you intend to use multiple cards, then go for that B2 750W by all means, it is worth it.

D3D error you mentioned is "due to device being lost", which means that probably the card failed to initialise its 3d engine due to lack of power. You already tried reinstalling drivers, windows and everything else, so driver issue is extremely unlikely. Besides, some (probably less-demanding) games work, so the card itself is almost certainly functioning fine.

yeah with hearthstone which doesnt take a whole lot it runs
with dead by daylight it crashed every so often-3-7 games
and with friday the 13th it crashed almost definitely every game

is it going to be the psu you think like 100% because i dont really have money to keep throwing at the pc but why would the power supply be fault after only a short time?

Right well im going to order the new one and try it tomorrow if it still happens is it the gpu?

new psu is ordered coming tomorrow so i will let you know once ive fitted it if the problem still persists

MERGED QUESTION
Question from KingC12 : "what kind of issues does the EVGA 100-W1-0500-K3 - 500W 80 Plus Power Supply have?"

If anyone has experienced this before with this power supply please let me know thank you
