my Toshiba Canvio 1tb with nti backup data is full. can I just start deleting data off it

I want to delete the backup data from the Toshiba Canvio 1 TB , it was all XP Stuff.
I have New windows 8.1, want to use it for that pc.

I'm having a similar problem. How do I know what files belong to the hard drive operation and need to stay on there?
