my western digital velociraptor is faster then my ssd?

i have a Samsung 840 pro as my main drive and a western digital velociraptor as my second drive i have noticed the western digital velociraptor runs quite a bit faster then the ssd. yet this would seam counter productive. how is it a drive that has been in production since at least 2012 maybe before faster then something that claims to be faster then any hdd on the market. i can not justify the cost of an ssd when the western digital velociraptor runs so much faster. this is just in my personal experience however but i would like to know other peoples views on this issue.

is an ssd really worth it compared to a drive that for a 1/5th of the price can run rings around it and be 4 times the size.

Yeah... no it's not. 2,200 watts is enough to power two space heaters.

That much power draw will bring a litre of water from room temperature (20 degrees centigrade) to boiling (100 degrees centigrade) in two and a half minutes.
 


Yeah, but you're in 110V-land.

Space heaters are typically up to 2.3kW here/in Aus.
 


I have 2 x 1500 watt oil space heaters (110V-land). Almost, but not quite enough, to heat a 1,800 sq ft 2 story house in the dead of winter. -2C daytime high. 1 upstairs, 1 downstairs.
 
i use one of those IR tube heaters, and with 400W per tube, one tube is often enough in a 200 sq ft room in really cold winters (-30C outside). sometimes both tubes and it's quite cozy, almost like a fireplace. the orange glow helps too.

but there's no way any (single) hard drive should be faster than even a junky ssd. the access time alone should be 10X faster, as should just about any small-file operation. even if the drive isn't in AHCI mode.

Power, firewood, and coal were historically very abundant here in NZ, and Aus is largely hot - cooling would have been more of a priority there.

As such, at least in NZ, insulation was never a big priority (and probably quite hard to manufacture) when colonisation started in the sub-tropics, and they just threw more energy at the problem when people started moving south. Changing now, though.
 
I had four WD Raptors in RAID 0 years back for my OS drive and then swapped them out for an Intel 80GB X25M (when they were around $500 each) and it blew the Raptor array away in all but large sequential files, which are infrequent for an OS drive.

That was a very early consumer SSD, but to this day it slaves away as a scratch drive with hundreds of TB written and it is still faster than your 840 Pro, so you have a problem with that drive.

If you have completely filled the drive you may need to do a secure erase to get it back up to its potential.

I won't even comment on the power supply issue, that's just silly.
