My windows file explorer changed appearence after the last update. Navigation bar and search bar look different now. Much smaller and cramped. The search function is also not as good as it used to be.
Before:

How do i change it back?

Not sure what has transpired....

However, the Before is "Downloads" and the After is "Quick Access".

Take a look at the configuration settings via the View tab.

Downloads is "details", Quick Access is "icons".

Also right click the "red X" icons and delve into the settings.

Hopefully the update just reverted back to some default settings.

Im not talking about the folder im in. My problem is that the nav and search bar looks different and searching for items doesn't work the same.

Type "File Explorer Options" in the Search box usually located in the lower left screen corner.

Check the General, View, and Seach tabs for current properties, options, and settings.

Another way: Control Panel > File Explorer Options

How do i change it back?

Microsoft disabled feature 18755234, apparently to comply with EU requirements, and pushed it out globally. That change reverts Windows 10 to the classic search that we had prior to the release of build 1909 in 2019. This change was not documented in the release notes. They just pushed it out.

You can get back the previous address / search bar by re-enabling feature 18755234:

  1. Download and extract ViveTool.

  2. Type cmd in Windows search and select Run as Administrator.

  3. CD to the folder that contains vivetool.exe.

  4. Enter this command:

    vivetool /enable /id:18755234

Note: You can also use Microsoft's StagingTool instead of ViveTool.
