I just ran into this and it doesn't make sense to me.

http://www.corsairmemory.com/products/dominator.aspx

Compare these:

TWIN2X2048-8500C5D
TWIN2X2048-8500C5DF

The first one has PC28500 as speed, which seems logical since it has 8500 in it's name.
The second one has PC26400 as speed, which seems illogical since it has 8500 in it's name.

Still, they both run at 1066 MHz...

It just doesn't make any sense to me. I thought the only difference between these two was the 'F' (it has a fan on it).

Does anyone know what's the story here?

I have no ideal but if I were to guess the TWIN2X2048-8500C5DF is able to run at 8500 but with very high latency. The memory at 8500 may be higher than a 7 latency but achieves a latency of 5 at 6400 which may make for a better sale point. The TWIN2X2048-8500C5D on the other hand may get a latency of 4 at 6400. This is just a guess so please dont shoot me if I am wrong.

It'll just be different info programmed into the spd chips. Don't worry, they'll both do the advertised speed. Perhaps the one that says pc6400 is factory overclocked micron d9 chips, and the other is cheaper pc8500 rated chips..... who knows. If you can find XMSYellowbeard he should know as he works for Corsair.
