I'm looking to upgrade my hard drive in my Windows Media Center ("WMC") PC, and was considering a Western Digital Red NAS drive, although I won't be using the drive in a NAS, just as an internal drive in the PC. The specs say it runs at 7200rpm but has "Intellipower" and other features which reduce power consumption, which seems perfect for a WMC environment. The price of this drive is comparable to other desktop drives. However, as I'm not using the drive specifically for NAS, would this drive actually be any better or different for WMC than a regular 7200 RPM desktop drive?

You might consider using one of the huge (4 or 5 TB) USB3 external drives to store media center stuff. I use 2 of them to store and access all my 6 TB of recorded TV shows without any problem in Windows 7, shared among 3 PC's in different rooms. I will never, ever "upgrade" to Windows 10 because it's lacking a Media Center and I let M$ know in no uncertain terms...
