I have a new HD 7850 2gb video card that I'm trying to power, but I cant find anything compatible with my motherboard (16pin). I bought a 650w psu, but of course, it's 24pin. Can I use this psu soley for the video card and not plug it into my motherboard or is there some kind of adapter for a 24 pin to 16pin? Please advise as I cant find any good solutions.

Here are the specs on my computer:

That is a real oddball proprietary connector that does not comply with ATX standards.

I would not try to just connect the adapter to the PSU since it will still be in the video slot with the other PSU.

To determine if you can use (or make) an adapter you need to look at the motherboard manual for what each of the 16 pins does and compare to a standard 20 or 24 pin ATX PSU connector (you can find pictures on wiki). The other choice is to hunt for a 24 to 16 pin adapter that is pin for pin specific for both sides that correspond to your connectors.

Do I just twist the excess wires together into the corresponding 16pin connector? I am vaguely familiar with some of the lines bt have never done it before and fear I may burn something out.

Oh man you have just gave me a glimmer of hope. So just so I'm perfectly clear; I will only plug in 16 of the 24 wires into my motherboard then tape up the excess?

I've searched everywhere for either a PSU <500w or a 24pin to 16pin connector, but have found nothing but a dell wire that doesnt look right. So what you're advising may be my last option.

Yeah that's the cord I saw, but I have an Intel processor and looking at the wiring from the picture and my current PSU at a glance, they do not seem to match up.

Also I'd have to order it online, which I dont want to wait for it to come in uness it's a sure fix. I read some reviews for this and some people were saying it didnt fix their issue.

Thank you though.
