My audio jack on my laptop died. My goal is to watch movies with my headphones via usb. I was planning on getting a standard audio jack to usb converter, but then came across many of these external usb sound cards like the ASUS Xonar U3, etc.

I am wondering if buying one of these would be a better option than just a audio jack to usb converter for watching movies?

If so, I am wondering which one is the best for under 50$ or so.

Again, just for using with my laptop to watch movies.

Solution
At this point, anything will get your boat moving forward since you're not looking for an experience that is above what you had from your laptop's onboard audio. You can pick up the cheapest solution available which at the moment of searching yielded a USB soundcard for about 1USD on Amazon. If you are shelling out on a USB sound card with a budget of 50USD, then you're already within USB driven headsets territory like the Corsair Raptor HS40.

You can surely use the headphones to watch the movies. However, it is necessary that you choose a proper free air subwoofer, which can give a better sound effect. Watching movie in car becomes interesting only when the sound effect is effective.
