[SOLVED] Need a new desktop computer!

Hi all, long time no post but I'm back. First of all sorry if this is in the wrong section.

This is all for my dad. I need some advice on a great desktop computer. Needs to be pre-built and somewhere we can buy it online, any links would also be great.

It's going to be used heavily, 0 gaming though so an advanced gpu is not required, many applications like office/word/internet browsing(with about 20 tabs open at once) all at once to be used and also my dad never likes to turn it off.

The budget is 600gbp but I could possibly push to 700 gbp.

We would like at least an i7 quad core cpu, preferably an amazing one, an ssd of at least 256gb size. preferablly 512gb. 8gb ram minimum,(prefer 12/16gb)

The rest can be completely open, motherboard etc wifi adapater, just needs 2/3 usb slots etc. The main focus is that it is extremely fast to open programs, starts up super quickly and can handle many office applications/20 tabs most running video without slowing down a single bit.

Add: I understand what I am asking for might be a bit overkill, but thats exactly what my dad likes and will make him happy. Spend a bit more now and he never expects to replace it. the more CPU/Ram overkill the better . Thank you

The problem is, with pre-built systems, normally with 8GB+ ram and 512 GB ssd, they will all put graphics cards in. so you either got to pay extra for the GPU, undercut the GPU so you move down to a i5 or go custom.
in every situation i completely recommend building a computer for best price to performance, but if a pre-built is completely neccersary a custom pc by pc special like this on, probably the best i can think of.
there may be some dell pre-built that may be what your looking for, but i couldnt find one.

Hi, first of all thank you for the recommendation. Can you say how much this would cost and what site I would need to build it on?

If a better GPU is required, then please suggest the pre-built with it, as I said, my dad wants severe overkill and he'll spend everyday happy with his super fast pc.

How does this cpu compare with an intel i7? unfortunately having only been forcefed intel cpu's all my life as "the best out there" I worry when I see anything non-intel branded.

There are two basic requirements for your need:

1. A ssd of some sort is the key to snappy performance. 240gb should be fine unless large video files are to be stored.
2. With many tabs open(particularly chrome) you need 16gb of ram.

Past that intel integrated graphics is fine, it will play hd movies.

Any of the 9th gen intel processors are very fast in single thread performance which is what you need.
A desktop user mainly does one thing at a time.
I3, I5, I7, I9 is a bit confusing with the mobile processors.
It does describe cores and threads, but not exactly like the similarly named desktop versions.
To compare the capabilities of a processor, look up the passmark numbers.
For example, the i5-9400:

Lenovo makes some good products, look at their web site.
In particular, look for some of the sale/discontinued products.

The i5-9400T has 6 cores and a very fast single thread processing speed. You need no more.

This one comes with 8gb of ram, but, I think you can add 8gb if you find you need it.

How would this be? Of course my dad likes to look and find himself, always wants something cheaper

Processor is ok, ssd is very good.
8gb of ram is not so good if dad wants to have many windows open.
Problem is that with only two ram slots on the motherboard, he may have to replace the 8gb of ram with a 2 x 8gb ddr3 upgrade.
The second generation i7-2600 is not near as capable as the 9th gen i5-9400 referenced above

Paying a bit more up front hurts only for a little while.
Regrets from buying something cheaper lasts much longer.
Pay what you need to for something good that you see and touch every day.
