Needing a new monitor and trying to decide what to get. I use my PC for mostly gaming and I'm trying to decide between 1440p or 144hz. I play a lot of games that would utilize the 144hz on my system. I'm planning on getting the 970 priced equivalent of the AMD 300 series when they come out. I've got a 7870 right now.

This is the one 144hz monitor I'm looking at right now: http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XL2420Z-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Professional/dp/B00HE61SOA/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1423791862&sr=1-6&keywords=144hz+monitor

Also looking at this 1440p one: http://www.amazon.com/PB278Q-27-Inch-LED-lit-Professional-Graphics/dp/B009C3M7H0/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1423965925&sr=1-1&keywords=1440p

I've never used a 144hz or 1440p monitor before. The concerns I have about the 144hz monitor is the TN panel looking bad. And the 1440p monitor is me not being able to push 1440p in many games. Will 1440p become a good option with a 970 equivalent GPU to get good frames? I've always favored FPS over image quality. Which one is going to feel better in games such as BF4/Hardline or GTA5? I realize that the power required to push 1440p or 144hz would be about the same. But if I'm not reaching that power in 1440p I may be getting what? 30-40fps. Where as if I'm not getting that power while using the 1080p 144hz monitor I'm getting 70-80fps? Anyone have experience with both? What should I be leaning towards?

That's a pretty easy one to answer. I'd go for the 1440p monitor over the 144 Hz one as your eyes can't reliable tell if anything is faster than about 30 Hz but they sure as heck can tell between 1440p and 1080p unless you have fairly poor eyesight or are sitting many feet away.

Consider that movies are 24 Hz and broadcast TV is 29.997 Hz and we don't see horrible flicker with them, but people are clamoring for displays in cell phones that would be about 10,000p resolution or more in a desktop-sized monitor.

TN panels also have their issues as you have said- color reproduction and viewing angles are mediocre (very poor if you rotate your TN monitor into portrait mode.) The two things TN monitors have going for them are low price and fast response time. In my mind, the only reason to get one is if you can't afford a better panel type at that resolution. However, I'd choose a 1440p or 4k (2160p) TN panel over a 1080p IPS or VA panel any day as the increase in resolution is more than enough in my mind to outweigh the downsides.

If we can't notice more than 30 Hz then how come I can clearly see the difference between playing at 60 FPS and 120 FPS?
