I have no clue where to start. When we had babies they had audio monitors but they hadn't developed video monitors and I don't think wifi existed, or smart phones for that matter.

If you had an elderly parent living in your house (so they didn't have to go to a nursing home or assisted living because they didn't want too do that) that you wanted to keep an eye on while you were gone (because they are sick, recovering from surgary, had pill addiction issues, or etc.), atleast in one room, how would you go about doing it. Assume you have wifi and want to be able to use iphones and droid phones with apps on the external end of this solution.

Maybe even new parents with kids might have some ideas.

Open to suggestions both using a camera and/or android pad in the house, or whatever, thanks

Do you need to record the video?

There are many ip camera solutions, you can always use a webcam or laptop/tablet camera.

The IP camera setup will allow you to use simple android/iphone apps to see your video stream remotely. Belkin, D-Link and foscam all have decent enough IP cameras; they wont be high resolution to where you could use it for facial recognition but it does not sound like your needs require anything high res. The foscam dome cameras have pan and tilt that you can control remotely and are less then $100.
