Need Advice/Help, $1000-$2500 build

Approximate Purchase Date: Month of April, By the end of the month I would like to have SOME of the parts ordered.

Budget Range: $1000-$2500 budget is a bit flexable, personally looking to make a system that will be fine for the next 4-5years before I need to build a new system.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: 3ds max, maya, photoshop CS5, gaming, Microsoft visual, surfing the internet, watching movies. I also like to have at least two to three programs active such as 3ds max, audacity, and photoshop CS5, as well as around 5 internet pages at once.

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor- right now I have a 42" LG TV that I double as a screen using an HDMI output, For the OS I would be using Windows 7 Ultimate (As it can deal with up to 32g of motherboard memory).

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg.com, need help or suggestions with other websites to get the biggest bang for my $.

Parts Preferences: Processor- Leaning towards a I7-3930k, mainly due to the potential it has for animation software as well as being somewhat 'future proof', but I am open to suggestions. I know everyone will say go with the i7-2600k(or w/e) but I am mainly more concerned with the performance of 3ds max, maya, photoshop which from my research will benifit a lot from the i7-3930k even vs the 4 core IB.
For Motherboard im looking towards the Asus x79 Sabertooth, or the Asus IV Rampage.

SLI or Crossfire: Yes, Eventually. What I am thinking of for now would be one GTX680 and then later adding on another video card. Video card selection is also part of my question as my main use will be for 3ds max, maya, photoshop but I will game (WoW,SW:TOR, BF3) so I dunno if I will need a card for 3ds max and then one for gaming or will the 680 be sufficent for both?

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, 1920x1200, looking for max res for details and for gaming.

Additional Comments: I am looking for a FULL build list (yes I need A LOT of help), This computer will more than likely run 16 hours a day so cooling might be an issue. For that Im thinking the H100 to keep that CPU cool but also need Full cooling solutions for the rest (or if you guys have any better ideas they are more than welcome).

With the 3930K and it's six cores you'll easily be able to get the most you can for your money - I think it will be far more future proof than Ivy will be in the long run. But if you've got a $2500 budget it can't be done with a 3930K and Rampage IV - you might have to drop to the i7-3820 which in and of itself is still a fairly capable CPU.

i would also recommend getting the i7 3930k for more cores and more cache.


i would like to change a few things to get ir right.

my build rough idea.


intel i7 3930k

it is six core and 10mb cache. it can overclock and the most bang for buck enthusists cpu.

asus sabertooth x79

it has a nice duribality and stability . it is also having a 5yrs warrenty.

or the asrock x79 extreme4

for a cheaper motherboard and better quality .

it also supports 3 way sli.

corsair vengence 4x4 gb 1600mhz ddr3 ram

for the stability and overclockability.

noctua nh d-14

the beast in cooling . it is the best air cooler and isa cheaper than h100.

corsair tx 750w or seasonic 750w or ocz 750w

one of the best psu.

corsair 500r white or 600T white

the best cases around.

crucial m4 128 gb sata 3 ssd.

the best ssd after intel ones.

wd carvier blue 500gb X 2 in raid 1

for storing the work files and raid 1 in case of failure.

msi gtx 560ti 2 gb twin frozer.

it is fast it is cool and cheaper.

I like these ideas, so If I was going to go with the I7 3930k processor My budget would need to increase to what? 3k? also I do not need a monitor (will go three side by side monitors in the future but for now I have that 42") and I do not need a keyboard or mouse or windows 7 (as I am a DeVry student ATM and get ANY version of windows even windows 7 profession for FREE. Taking this out of the 1st build would leave me with an additional $464.96 in change. Lets apply that to the new build.

OK if you don't need OS or monitor for now you can easily get the 3930K, and with the D14 you can OC it to 4.5 - 5GHz easily.

If you're increasing the budget to $3K and you don't need monitor you can easily add another 680 and still come in well under $3K.

So same build as you listed, assuming im not getting a monitor and keyboard/mouse as well as the OS? Im thinking about getting more ram 32g instead of another GTX680 because its a beast and the ram due to the rendering and photoshop etc. What other suggestion would you suggest getting in lue of another 680 since I should have change from the ram.

love your answer why_me, system looks perfect. Only question is in CPU and GPU cooling. For the CPU itself i noticed that you included a air cooling heatsink, but my understanding is the i7 3930k will run hot due to the 130v per core. For this reason wouldn't it be better to go with the H100 watercooling unit? as for the GPU im open to suggestion on how to keep this cool( will probbly buy in the future and not at this time but what to get an idea of what im looking for, make sense?) but again I like the idea of water cooling due to the results and like the idea of closed loop systems like the H100 for no maintaince.

Any other ideas for a build with the i7 3930k + 32g of ram and a gtx 680?? or does "why_me's" build pritty much hit the nail on the head? Personally I like Why_me's build so if you are going to submit a build kinda stay within the same budget/idea, but again any ideas or constructive criticism needed and welcome.!!!

One idea I had was aftermarket cooling for the GTX 680, under full load i expect this to run hot so I was thinking about WC'ing or just getting an After market fan to help with this, but I have no idea even where to start. I do like the idea of going with the closed loop system like the H100 but thats for the CPU can similar products like this be used directly for a GPU?.. just what do I need to know or look at??

Also for a power supply is the listed 850w going to be enough? assuming I want dual GTX 680's, I7 3930k, 32g's of ram, and a decent 2.1 speaker setup (REALLY a novice when it comes to audio/speakers) or am I going to want a 1200w psu or something like that. TBH id rather get a few components, like the psu, with later FULL upgrades in mind such as dual graphics cards,speakers, etc in mind. That said what would I be looking at/for?
