Just make sure that its USB 3 and make sure that you don't have too many other USB devices.
Also I find that it struggles if you have multiple programs trying to access the USB at the same time.

But you should be able to install games to it and play them, just don't pull or bump the cable while you are accessing the disk.

USB external is best for backup storage and not treated as a normal system disk.

Is there any reason why you can't upgrade your laptop hdd?

External HDDs are just the ticket for backups & HDD or partition images, but I wouldn't install any apps on one, especially not games as USB interface would be too slow - - game would take ages to load.

I can recommend WD external HDDs without hesitation - -- they have been so reliable for me. I've got three of them, all over 6 years old and still going strong.

Also make sure you have lot's of ram for HDD caching and set low sleep timeouts for the drive under windows power management. It should allow the drive to last much longer. Also make sure the drive stays extra cool by ensuring that there is plenty of space around the drive, like 30cm all around and nothing covering it like by placing in a multi tier shelf unit.

I had a friend who had a WD My passport connected to his laptop and it ran almost 24/7 for torrents for about a year before it died. It sat on the floor all that time.
