Need advice on potential component failure

I have a friend who was running windows xp and encountered the "system file missing/corrupt" issue. I initially resolved this issue by backing up through mini xp and then formatting the hard drive with the xp cd.

However this problem has occurred again after installing fresh windows xp. I have already run a memtest86 (1pass) with no errors and also a CHKDSK which did find errors and apparently corrected them.

I suspect the problem is the hard drive, but I am not 100% sure. So would it be best to change hard drive and possibly OS.

Try running the manufacturers diagnostic tools on the hard drive.

Hitachi - just use the WD tools, it's the same company. Or use WinDFT but I think it's outdated - https://www.hgst.com/support/downloads#DFT

If the drive passes a long test it's very unlikely to be at fault.

SeaTools works on almost any drive so if you are unsure just use that.

it look like that.... maybe is the HDD or OS ON DVD DAMAGED
so try an other hdd first and see

Thanks guys for the replies I ran the Seagate test and it immediately picked up errors. I think its fair to say the hdd is f**d up.
