Need advice on whether to upgrade or not to new Intel CPU

If you've seen any of my other threads, im having some hardware issues with my motherboard (the network hardware seems to have failed). Anyhow, I was going to replace just the mobo, but my CPU is socket 1155 and finding a motherboard I want is just not really a possibility now.

So I was considering just getting a new motherboard / cpu. A store clerk was talking me into the i7 4790k and a Gigabyte Gaming 7 mobo (which is fine).

I have an i7 3790k, and I have no problems with it, it runs everything I do just fine. And since Broadwell/Skylake is around the corner, does it make sense to upgrade now? And will there be much of a difference if I did upgrade to one or the other? The computer is used 90% for gaming, I already have a GTX 970, 16gb ram, and an SSD. Is a new processor going to really help at all?

Thanks

I'd say hunt down a a new old stock motherboard or possibly a 2nd hand one. The haswell's aren't a major improvement over your processor and there doesn't appear to be an equivalent processor on broadwell so you'd be waiting for skylake before you'd get a new processor.

From what i've read, Broadwell is an increase in power efficiency where Skylake will be an actual processing power increase? In which case it makes more sense to wait for Skylake. Skylake is slated for end of 2015 I think?

thanks for the info. I think im just going to grab a network card and wait it out.

Well haswell i7s don't step on the ivybridge i7s they just stand on level practically. Skylake...? well I see the same repetition skylake will not be a stepping stone over haswell not even the ivybridge. Skylake is all the way in septemeber, i don't think waiting 4 months for a CPU that will be 10% or less difference is worth it. I rather just get the haswell, look for nice deals and if possible keep checking for 1155 motherboard, a second hand one might not be soo bad.

@Pyre, well the truth is i am not really in a hurry to get a CPU since theres nothing wrong with mine! I've been weighing my options, its either $20 for a PCIe NIC or $500 for a new mobo+cpu! So if anything, i think i'd rather wait it out.
