Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice or recommendations on upgrading my current laptop. It’s an Acer Aspire VX5-591G, which I’ve been using for the past 8 years. It’s still working pretty well, but as a graphic designer, I’m starting to experience some performance issues—especially when working with large files in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). There are noticeable loading times and occasional lag.

Here are my current specs:
I’m open to upgrading any components—RAM, GPU, SSD, or even the motherboard if needed. I’m not in a rush to buy a brand new machine, but I do want to future-proof my setup if that’s possible.

Would you recommend:
  • Upgrading this current setup?
  • Switching to a desktop for better upgrade flexibility?
  • Buying a newer laptop instead of upgrading this one?
Any feedback, ideas, or upgrade paths would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The GPU and processor are solder to the motherboard on the laptop, so they're out of the picture. Swapping out the motherboard isn't a simple task either as the I/O ports won't align;

That leaves us with avenues to upgrade the ram and SSD. What are the makes and models of your SSD, HDD and ram?

Laptops are meant for mobility or on-the-go users. The laptops found these days are hot headed running close to or at 100 Deg C that they're not meant for a lap, rather a table top. With regards to that, I'd opt for a desktop and have the laptop as is.

How much do you have set aside for either an upgrade, a new desktop or a new laptop? Where are you located?

Hi Lutfij,

I really appreciate your detailed response. I visited a local computer shop and the ones you mentioned are exactly what the technician said to me.

I decided to max out the capabilities of my laptop, and here's what the upgrade looks like:
• 512GB M.2 NVME SSD for boot up/OS
• 1TB 2.5 SATA Internal SSD
• 32GB 3200mhz RAM (though only 2400mhz is my max ram speed)

I'll be pretty satisfied with this upgrade knowing that GTX 1050 Ti and i7-7700HQ is still pretty solid with the apps that I am using daily.

What do you think?

How much do you have set aside for either an upgrade, a new desktop or a new laptop? > for now, I won't be buying new laptop since I have desktop for backup. I travel once a month and I need to bring the laptop to work.

Where are you located? > I'm from the Philippines
