i think i will get the BFG 7800GS AGP, but in a month or so.
BFG seems to be a popular choice.

thanks all for the advice

ok, i still have not bought a new card, was just looking in to whether my psu is good enough to run the new card (BFG 7800GS).

I have a Qtec 550w psu, and looking at the spec on the side it says the 12v can go up to 20A peak and 14A max
This seems a little low going by what i have heard is the required amps on a 12v rail (20A), but there does not seem to be many PSUs out there that will meet that requirement.

I found this puse, a FSP 600watt :

Output Voltage Min. load Max. load Load Reg. Ripple & Noise
+5V 0.5 A 30.0A +-5% 50mV P-P
+12V1 0.0A 15.0A +-5% 120mV P-P
+12V2 0.0A 15.0A +-5% 120 mV P-P
+12V3 0.9A 15.0A +-5% 120mV P-P
+12V4 0.1A 15.0A +-5% 120mV P-P
+3.3V 0.8A 36.0A +-5% 50mV P-P
-12V 0.0A 0.5A +-10% 120mV P-P
+5Vsb 0.0A 2.0A +-5% 50mV P-P

which seems like a high spec psu, buteach individual rail does not meet the 20A requirement

and another, Enermax 600watt :

DC Output, Rippe&Noise, Tolerance, Current, Min. / Max.

+3.3V, 50mV, ±5%, 0.5A / 34A
+5V, 50mV, ±5%, 0.3A / 34A
+12V 1, 120mV, ±5%, 0.5A / 18A
+12V 2, 120mV, ±5%, 0.5A / 18A
-12V, 120mV, ±10%, 0A / 0.8A
+5Vsb, 50mV, ±5%, 0A / 2.5A
+3.3V & +5V, 320W

Total Power 600W

again each rail not merting the 20A requirement

would my existing psu run the 7800GS AGP, and if not could anyone point me in the direction of a psu that would run it?

thanks for your help

Your Qtec is most likely enough. Buy the card and throw it in though. If the PSU can't cut it the game will crash but it's not going to damage any of your hardware.

i have a truepower 380W and it runs the XFX 7800 GS OC extreme just fine. along with 2 hard drives 2 disc drives sound card etc.

btw my opinion is go for the xfx cause it has 440 MHZ compared to 400MHz of the BFG. look on ebay, it has better prices because the retail price on it has gone up by about $50 since it was released, after people realized how good it is for agp

thanks for the replies guys
I will do that then , try the new card with my current psu, then if it is nto enough to run it then i will look for a better psu.

you think go with the XFX? i have no experience with either XFX or BFG, but i was thinking of going BFG due to their warranty.
do you think there will be any problems short or long term due to the XFX extreme being clocked much higher than standard?

the XFX is not too much of a price difference to the BFG at the place i get my stuff from :

XFX GeForce 7800 GS Extreme Edition £234.94
BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB £229.07
