Need answer about pirate software

My friend has a system that must be a pirated copy of XP Home. It comes up ad warns that this is not a legal copy. Can I take a legal copy and install over it so he does not loose any data. Will this correct the problem. Bruce

If the legal copy's key code is in use - that's a no go, mostly.

Laptop? Desktop? OEM? Full? What is his system rig & flavor?

If his is a full version, then the reinstall must be a full.

OEM to OEM if that's the case. If yours' is a laptop, full, and your friend has a desktop, full, the overwrite will work with your key.

One key is good for two machines if one is a laptop & the other is a desktop.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!!! On Windows XP, one key is good for ONE machine only. The only key that can be used on a laptop and a desktop is a Microsoft Office key if the software is purchased separately and not with the PC. Where do you get you information?

I've got 34 people doing exactly that - mobile & desktop - same key. No problem from MS.

In that case, I bought Vista Home Prem. OEM Full for my laptop, will that same disc and key # work on my desktop? Another question, I bought of the IE a OEM office prof. enterprise Edition 2003. {volume license product} I have the key that came with it. This said not for oem distribution. IS this going to work.It is a 4 cd set. Bruce
