Hello! I have a computer that has an ASUS Striker Extreme. This was given to me by a friend graciously, as he has not used in 2 years, and with everything on the computer, it could be beneficial to both videography I hope to do and to a ministry we both are a part of.

When we go to boot up the computer, it will come to the "Gamers Republic" screen, and I can press tab to see a BIOS port menu, which will show me the processors and RAM, but if I go to hit DEL to go to setup or F8 to boot menu, it will say "entering (setup/boot menu)" and do nothing whatsoever. Can anyone help? I am a novice at learning how to diagnose and repair problems in computers. Any and all advice is MUCH welcome. Thank you a ton.

The Asus Striker...

The Asus Striker Extreme is built around the NVidia NForce 680i chipset. NVidia got out of the chipset business for a very good reason, they fucking suck at it. The 680i is perhaps one of the worst pieces of crap to have ever been introduced to the market. It takes a special kind of engineering failure to have a North Bridge chip that draws more power than the CPU itself. I have in my basement three or four 680i/780i based motherboards including an Asus Striker Extreme, all of them are dead.

Seriously, they just die randomly, even with full liquid cooling. I've got numerous Intel 4 series motherboards kicking around that are still working, including one very reliable Asus P5Q-Pro Turbo that has been to overclocking hell and back.

The first thing that I would try to do is change the button battery on the motherboard. The Striker Extreme was released in 2006, which would put that battery at almost 8 years old. Remove that and try booting it up.

If that fails, try disconnecting any storage devices that are attached to it. Hard drives fail a lot and said failures can wreck havoc on poorly designed storage controllers.

If that fails, take it out back and use it for target practice. Not only is it not worth saving, it doesn't even support a lot of the new technologies such as AHCI or proper power management. They just suck, period.
