Hi there,

My parents last motherboard has burnt and I need to get them another one. But I cant find one that would be good. The CPU they have is Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E7400, GeForce GTX 670, 500W PSU, ram 4 GB, 125GB ssd. They also have some simple 5.1 speakers so that would be needed on the motherboard.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Solution
A core i3-4160 would be fine for their use with an inexpensive H97 motherboard and 8GB memory. The quality of the PSU is important and you did not list brand/model. If the PSU is more than 5-7 years old it should be replaced unless it is top of the line. If the original pc was store bought you will most likely need a new case but there's plenty of inexpensive options for that. New motherboard means you'll need clean OS install so you'll need a windows disc if you don't have one.

Here's a list to check out-

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor ($107.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150...

I tired Ebay, there seems to be no motherboards that are compatible with the processor. I guess its because its that old. If I have to spend $100+ on shitty motherboard maybe I should just get a new processor and a motherboard? What would be your opinion on that.

I will try to make it as short as possible.

Currently I am updating my own gaming pc so some of the parts I can use in my old pc that my parents would be using. I am getting new Graphics card and new ssd so I will be giving the current graphics card GTX690 and ssd to the old computer.

What it looks like is that for the old system there is a graphics card, PSU and hard drive. If like you said completely scraping the last processor would be a better idea, what would you recomd ??

I don't want to spend too much as I have already spend a lot on the my on pc upgrades. I am thinking around $350. Could that get me something decent enough ?? It doesn't have to be super. They will only use it for web browsing any maybe playing games from time to time but obviously not max setting, I would say just playable enough would do them.

Thanks for your help

The PSU is fsp500-60apn it hasn't been used yet since it got replaced which would mean its still brand new. Regarding the CPU and motherboard I manged to find them on Amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-H97-Gaming-LGA1150-Motherboard/dp/B00K8K7DDO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1439240095&sr=8-3&keywords=H97+motherboard and http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00M0F0PR6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE. Do you think they should do the job ??

Regarding the case I will give them the one I am using right now because I have purchased one for myself. Another thing they only have about 4GB of RAM 2x2GB should I get them another 4GB or do you think the 4 would do it ??

Once again thanks for your help.

I am from Ireland so I can only use UK amazon which cost a bit more when it comes to pc parts.

I have 4 gb left of DDR2 memory but there would be no use of it in the new motherboard right as it only supports DDR3.

The only issue is the motherboard not having support for 5.1 speakers.

It does and all. God I am stupid. Would that work exactly the same as would the other combination? Because this one comes out cheaper by 100 euro

Ended up going with with the Intel as that's what I have in my computer, If I ever needed to upgrade my processor I could just throw it into their pc. Also the intel parts I can get much faster then the AMD.

Thanks for your help Archaic59 and madmatt30.

I have spoiled myself with a Zotac NVIDIA GTX 980Ti AMP Extreme, new case and water cooling for CPU.

I know this is not a place to ask but would you by any chance know if a 500W power supply will be enough for my system. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/pqqgWZ

Thanks again for your help.
