Hello,

I just got a new job as a lead artist and they are buying me the best computer setup I can find.

I don't technically have a budget so what would you recommend for 3D animation/rendering/video editing/graphic design?

I'll be primarily using Maya, 3DS Max, and hopefully Z-Brush but I will also be using the basic cloud apps like after effects and Premiere pro for footage I'll shoot and I'll also be designing stuff.

I'm not very tech Savvy and I just graduated so I haven't used anything other than the school computers so I don't even know where to start

Thanks

Because it was a terrible CPU when it was new and it's an even worse CPU now that the Ryzen series exists. Even the low end R3-1200X is a better CPU than an FX-8320 is. Just because it has 9 out of 10 on store reviews doesn't necessarily mean you should buy it now. A lot of junk gets inexplicably highly rated on store reviews and you should always take them with a grain of salt.

I believe you are taking about a different thread. As many other have said any FX cpu is just a bad idea for this OPs uses please keep it on topic. Thank you

Given that the OP said that he is working as a lead artist, isn't tech savvy, and the company will buy the computer for him without much budget constraint, I would suggest to just get a prebuilt workstation to keep things simple and minimize the company contact list should anything not work right.

An HP Z440/640/840 or Dell Precision workstation would be fine. Heck, HP is going to be launching a new Z series of workstations in the coming months. Maybe consider that.

This build is NOT good for 3D animation whatsoever.

My suggestion is you leave this thread and stop taking it off topic. Other peoples threads are for them to get help not for you to go on a low cost crusade.

Leave it alone, this is your only warning.

The Kraken is an Asetek unit? But I thought it was fit for Threadripper no? It comes up in PC Part Picker on a TR4 socket motherboard.

Get the best graphics card you can afford, then i would look at getting a ryzen card. Ryzen are best suited for what you will be doing, and since they are paying go with nothing less than 32 of memory, a m.2 card for your operating system and a 2 T or greater hard drive. Other than saying a ryzen card, all your other parts are purely personal choice, with pros and cons.

Yes a Ryzen chip, my apologies on calling it a card.

What's a Ryzen card? You mean a Ryzen CPU?

Ryzen 1800
Asus Prime B350-Plus
32 Gb ram
Nvidia P5000 Quadro
2 - WD 2Tb Black HDD
750 watt gold psu
Dell Ultra HD 4k Monitor P2715Q

This is for Pro Work and some play time!

Went on PCPartPicker UK approx cost GBP5500, not your money so what the heck!

Did you just go through PCPP and buy the most expensive stuff you could. Because other than the GPUs, most every system here can demolish this one in rendering tasks for 1/8th the price

CPU the good choices are i9 and Threadripper. A person must be nuts to build that $36000 computer and get demolished by a $5000 rig. If he buys those parts he will def get fired next day. Not having a budget doesn't mean he should throw his company money away.
