Need help finding the IP address of a network switch.

Hello all, so I got finally grabbed a network switch to mount in my rack, and it's working great (though it seems just as loud as a server itself, I'll have to change the fans at some point), the issue is, I can't see it on the network, at all, not through arp, not through an ip scanning program, I can't see the things MAC address anywhere.

I'm pretty stuck here, since the only thing mentioned aside from that is a serial web utility that lets you access the web interface via serial port, which I don't have any cables for.

A couple manuals are here but are not helpful.

edit: maybe it has some sort of setting or something that turns off this feature, I don't know, but I have no other way to get into the darn thing.

there should be a lable for the default ip stack on the bottom of the switch. or the software cd and the user guild shows the default password and stack ip for there switch that you can log in by a web broswer.

Unfortunately it is second hand, so no CD, and there's only a MAC address on the unit, which doesn't show on the network whatsoever.

I'll have to check through a box of misc. cables I got but I don't think I have any serial ones, that seems like it will be the only way to get it, from the manual it seems you have to manually assign an IP

edit: nope, nothing. I might be able to wire the needed pins to the ones on one of my blade servers if I can find my female .01 inch header pins for microcontroller stuff, but I'm not sure if those will fit very well.

edit 1: shit, I'm all out of those apparently, and don't feel like spending $10 on a cable I'll only use once, hopefully I can find one cheap through local classifieds or something where someone is unloading them. Pain in the ass though, since my sleep is reversed and I'll be asleep when I could get anything. uhg

edit 2: actually, I think if I use some heat shrink and alligator clip cables I can make it work without shorting anything, it sure won't be pretty though lol

edit 3: I might still need this serial web utility though, which I can't find anywhere, it mentioned telnet maybe there's a command line way to give this an ip.

Cisco won't let me download no matter how much info I enter, it still says "we need your full address"

3com download gives a 404.

I've used advanced IP scanner and spiceworks and neither show the device, spiceworks barely shows anything in the network map for some reason.

I've never bothered to use serial in windows before, so brand new to it, is there a way to access it through command prompt/powershell, or do I need a third party app to do it?

Uhg, just my luck, I thought null modem cabels just needed rx and tx swapped, but no there's a bunch of other crap that needs to be done too.

Just when I thought I was so close to getting this done, god damn it. I guess it's not as simple as arduino/microcontroller serial, sigh.

Have it running now, you'd think that it should be able to find the thing since they made it, we'll see when it's done. Aside from that I have it mounted in the rack, and it is working fine, getting good DL speeds on both servers that are in right now, I'd just like to reset it so that it can re-learn from the start, plus then I can use it's other features. Failing that I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy a null modem cable.

Nope, same as the other programs, the switch is completely invisible, which I mean sure would be good in some situations I'm sure, but not in this one.

Already tried that, with that program, both connected through ethernet to the switch, and via wifi to the router. Nada. It's like the thing isn't even there. The only evidence is the physical thing itself, and that two computers are showing as hooked to the same ethernet port on the router.

It maybe disabled by default, you may have to buy the dang cable.
