Need help for new GPU

Hello,

I have recently bought an i7 4790k, msi gaming 5 and 8gb of ddr3. My question is: should I go for the 970 or 980? Got a 720p monitor but will upgrade to 1080p 144hz soon enough. I've read a lot of reviews and benchmarks but still can't decide if the performance of the 980 is worth the 250€ price difference.

What's your thoughts?

At 1080p, there will be no real need to go beyond the GTX 970.

The GTX 980 is what it have and it is a beast of a GPU. It will run ANY game at 1080p and at 1440p. The 970 will also run any game at 1080p but at lower FPS. If would say if you have the money for the 980, it is definitely worth it.

Agreed, past the gtx 970 you will see diminishing returns at 1080p.

the 970 has 3.5gb of memory not 4gb as stated, as 0.5 is gimped, if you got the cash go with the 980, and get a 1440p 144hz gsync monitor. you wont regret it

At OP: If you were assuming that dual 3.5 GB cards would total 7GB VRAM, don't. VRAM is not additive in SLI.

I see. What about the new AMD series (R3xx)? I've seen the prices went up for the 900 series since the release..I guess they will drop after the new AMD series? Also, is the RAM on the 970 really that bad after the 3.5GB mark?

That depends on the new directx 12, card memory wont be mirrored if the engine supports it. dont quote me on that tho lol

970 3.5mark YES, its gimped.

The 390 is only months away and will beat the new Titan X at half the cost.
