Need Help getting my STRIX GTX 980 to work on a Gateway DX4870

Got a gtx 980 yesterday and tried putting it in my motherboard it fitted ok still big but wasn't riding on anything. I Checked if everything was plugged in correctly and it was. Started up my PC it seemed to be working. The gateway logo popped up but it wasn't the same size as usual. Then the logo vanished then a white blinking underscore was on the top left corner. I waited for a bit and it didn't seem it was doing anything then it locked up. Re turned on my PC and the logo popped up again regular sized and the screen was filled with purple lines like it locked up. Idk if its the motherboard or if my psu is too low or just this card is to much for my PC too handle. Any ideas on what i could do? or if this card is too much any recommendations on any GPUs that should be compatible with my Gateway DX4870?

The wattage of the psu should be printed on a sticker it. If it is the standard 300w model, you may need a bigger one for the GTX 980

Should be enough. And it has the additional PCI-E power connectors for the card already?

yea it did come with one i didnt use it thoe

But you do know, you have to connect the additional power cable(s) to the card? Asus says 6+8 pin PCIe power required!
