hey. my friend got the gtx 980 and he want's to upgrade to 1080.
hes playing on 1440P with 165HZ and the gtx 980 can't handle all the new games on ultra at that res... and of course he got no benefit from the 165HZ.
u think he should upgrade or wait for the TI?

Solution

yea but he want's to sell his 980 and buy 1080 and in the future the price of the 980 will go down and he will have to pay more for new card...

he will notice the diff between the 980 and the 1080 right? 9 months is alot of time... and he want's to sell hes 980 to buy 1080... in the future the price of the 980 will drop so he will have to pay more for a new card...

Well based on the efficiency of the new architecture, he could also sell his 980, buy one of the new GTX 1080 hybrid cards (water cooled) and overclock it. If he wants to get around 144-165FPS in heavier games those are his options, either wait for the 1080 Ti or overclock a water cooled 1080.

A stock 1080 is around 25% faster than a stock 980. Which is not that bad at all. But if he wants 100 fps+ on the highest setting on that resolution then he will need sli.. Most normal games are fine with one card like a 980, but some games like Crysis 3 which the gtx 1080 at 1440p only does around 67fps on ultra settings... You get the point.

Again it all depends on what games he plays..

a stock 1080 is around 25% faster than a stock 980 TI . not a regular 980.
he's playing all the new and heavy games. doom BF ROTTR JC3 GTA OVERWATCH all that stuff.

Uh yes my bad i meant the 980 ti. But doesnt change my point really.. He can't expect the settings to be ultra every time on all those games.. He will struggle to keep the fps above 100.

Look at this:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-pascal,4572-6.html
You can see how it's making an stable 100 on bf4 and 80s on gta..

yea but 100 and 80 FPS are much better in those games then 40-50 with the 980...

It is, but he has a 165hz monitor, which means he needs to keep fps more then lets say a 100 to even start to benefit from the monitor. So if he is satisfied with that then fine, but as I said 1 1080 is not going to deliver what he really wants. I do recommend lowering the settings, like AA as at that resolution you wouldnt need it.
