Question Need Help IDing Old Processor

Hello All, I recently got an old Windows 2000 computer equipped with an ASUS CUSL2-C Black Pearl mainboard that's running slower than desired.

I want to overclock the CPU but I want to know its limit before I burn it up, but I don't know the model of it is.

The only information I have to go off of is "x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 10 GenuineIntel ~501 Mhz"

I tried looking it up which resulted in a Core 2 Duo? It's obviously not. Also can't find it in device manager or BIOS so I'm outta luck. Any ideas on what it could be?

Half decent I would say, something that doesn't stutter while trying to open an application.

SIDE NOTE:
I did overclock it to 1110Mhz which is performing a lot better now, but it still stutters a little. Doesn't seem like it's straining the CPU too badly yet.

Regarding the computer: I would first suspect the PSU.

AOpen 350-400 watt

Not necessarily on the wattage. PSU may simply just be getting old and nearing its' designed in EOL (End of Life).

Thus starting to falter and fail at peak demands.

Anyway Asus CUSL2-C is Socket 370 Pentium 3 board.
It's way before core 2 duo and even before Pentium 4.

I'll have to dig around in my bit box and see if I've got anything faster. It'll be near the 80386SX and 80486DX. Then there's the really old stuff (8086, 6502).

I'd go hunting on eBay for the fastest chip available. A Celeron 950, 1000 or 1100 should improve performance, but they might be rare as hen's teeth at an acceptable price. Maybe a P3 instead? See what's available.

You might not have the same large overclocking potential as the Celeron 500 (+600MHz) but it might place less strain on the CPU if it's already rated at a higher speed. You'd probably push a Celeron 1100 up a few hundred MHz.
