Need help on installing GPU

Hello all i just bought a Gigabyte G1 and i dont know how to use in really, im a bit of a noob at this.I installed it into my PC, i connected the cables from my PSU to the GPU, i then plugged in the outlet cable and inserted the VGA cable to the motherboard to display it to my monitor. Then i turned it on and saw the Blue Wind force logo light up and the fans started spinning but then my monitor was blank and said searching for signal (Im currently using an VGA 900p monitor but i also have an HDTV with an HDMI) Do i have to put the HDMI cable to the GPU instead of the motherboard to show display ? I really want to see what my PC can really do. Thanks.

Yes, you will have to have the monitor connected to the GPU.

Also go into the BIOS and make sure the output is set to External first.
