Hello guys,
First of all, I recently heard on Tom's hardware that my Cpu is a bottleneck for my EVGA GTX 970 SC edition. Now i want to OC it to 4.8Ghz, My Watercooling system is the
Enermax Liqmax II 120S. I didn't Oc my cpu before, I just overclocked my old Gpu
(Gtx 750Ti). Never oc'ed a cpu before. I just Auto-Overclocked my cpu to 4.3Ghz. Now my temps are 29-32 Celsius on idle and 39-48 on Heavy gaming. I want to Oc my cpu to 4.8Ghz. What should i do? What are the steps? Thanks for all the help.

whats your motherboard, you need a good motherboard to reach 4.8ghz

edit: the only game i noticed that bottlenecked my gtx970 was BF4, and i turned the resolution up from 1080 to 1440 and viola no more bottleneck.
but project cars and witcher 3 I saw no bottleneck at 1080 res

Well first what are the rest of your specs motherboard? Power supply? 4.8-4.9ghz is quite high and not all fx 8350s will be capable of that, depending on how you did in the silicon lottery and how good the rest of your parts are will determine if you can go that high.

Its the M5A97 EVO are you sure? If its the regular M5A97 I wouldn't recommend you push the overclock very high at all. And i dont believe that power supply is very good cant find much on it, it has enough power not sure on quality. If you want to give it a shot follow the steps in this video below, he is using a similar bios in this video so it should be somewhat easy to follow just be aware you wont have all the features on your mobo as he has on that crosshair v mobo.

So what? You're saying that i need to live with my bottleneck? I even perform worde with my gtx 970 on some games at ultra, I player on ultra with my 750ti and got more fps on some games. What am i supposed to do?

You perform worse with the 970? Even with a bottleneck that doesn't make sense, you could have some driver issues or something. An overclock wont solve that.

I don't know. I tried to uwe DDU and deinstall drivers and install new ones or older ones but nothing fixed it. For example, When i play World of Tanks on ultra preset i get like 55-80Fps but its mostly around the 58, Vsync off. When i played it with my 750ti i got 58 to 65fps constantly.
I don't really know what to do, I payed 360 Euros for this card to get worse fps than my f**kng 750ti????

Yeah I would pretty upset as well. Im not sure whats causing that but its not a cpu bottleneck I doubt a cpu overclock will do anything to fix that. Do you have msi afterburner or something? If so what are the temps of the 970? what is gpu usage at? And what is the core clock speed? While gaming.

with a quick google search i see that game is cpu intensive, so your a limited by your cpu probably and upgrading your graphics card probably didnt make that much of a difference if thats the main game you play you should of spent the money on a intel setup.
that being said i had a gtx 760 and upgraded to a gtx 970, i saw i huge leap in performance in bf4,project cars and witcher 3 witch use cpu and gpu equally(roughly)
id still try for 4.4ghz-4.5ghz, my motherboard is bascially the same as yours and i reached 4.4ghz

and check all the stuff dunlop said.
I could install the game and try it to see wait i get in fps if you like

My Clockspeeds are at max ingame around the 1300Mhz because that's the Evga SC version's MHz.
My Temperatures are normal like 45 to 60 Degrees. Usage keeps low in almost every game like around the 30 to 70 % USAGE.
I have another Thread about my GPU that its at Low usage, Didn't get a good answer on that so I tried to open a Thread about Overclocking because they told me that I may have an CPU Bottleneck

WOT is not necesarily a CPU intensive game, the problem is that it just uses one core for absolutely everything, so it just needs one strong core, something AMD is seriously lacking. You were CPU bottlenecked before with your 750 Ti and you are still (obviously) bottlenecked with your 970. I used to have a setup like yours and the game bottlenecked like crazy on a R9 270.

As for the other games, you may be seing slightly worse performance because the drivers for the 750Ti may be a bit more mature with less CPU overhead than the ones for the 970, but that is just a guess though.

If I were to play CPU intensive games like BF4 on that CPU I would expect the same, or even slightly lower fps than with a 750Ti.

A fx 8350 will not bottleneck a 970 so bad that it performs worse than a 750 ti, in my opinion it has to be a software issue. BF4 runs very well on amd cpu's always has that game is actually decently multithreaded no way a 970 would perform worse than 750 ti in bf4 due to a cpu bottleneck.

He didn't say BF4 runs worse. He never even mentioned it. I was just using the game as an hipothetical example. Like I said, it was just a guess of WHY some games may be running SLIGHTLY slower than before. I agree that BF4 is a well multithreaded game, though, but if I were to play it on that CPU I wouldnt expect much of an imrpovement over a 750 Ti.

Anyway, what I can say for sure, and to talk about a game that he DID mention is that WOT is indeed very CPU bottlecked unless you have a good intel CPU and you really shouldn't expect any sort of improvement since the game is not graphically very demanding.

Everyone talking about BF4, That's actually my favorite and problemless game to this day, I played It on medium with my 750TI and Ultra on my 970 now, FOV is maxed also and I get 80 to 100Fps no drops or something like that, I just love that game and its not bad its running very smooth and good on my pc now, Actually BF4 is the only game where my GPU uses 99Percent and therefor I think I have very smooth gameplay without overheating or any other problem

I have never played WOT so i cant comment on that, but I know without a doubt bf4 would see a LARGE increase in performance 750 ti vs 970 even with that cpu, and the OP's experience seems to back that up.

recommended cpu for WOT is a Athlon x2 5600. it's not your cpu speed that's your problem. can you find out your temps for your motherboard? Amd overdrive or HWmonitor
sorry I got the specs from NVidia.com, these specs are from WOT website
Operating system: Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 10 (64-bit)
Processor: Intel Core i5-3330
RAM: 4 GB
Video card: GeForce GTX660 (2GB) / Radeon HD 7850 2GB, DirectX 9.0c
Sound: Compatible with DirectX9.0c
Hard drive space: 30 GB
Internet Speed: 1024 Kbps or higher (for voice chat)

I had a gtx 760 and a 8350 playing bf4 and I upgraded to a 970 and it was a huge leap in frames per second.
As for the OP, I downloaded WOT this morning and I'll try to play it today but if I can't i will play it first thing tomorrow morning.

Guys Guys, Listen to me. I just OC'ed to 4.62GHZ and tested Total War Rome 2 (A Very UnOptimized Game). I played it on HIGH for 60Fps,
Now on the benchmark test with 4.62GHZ on EXTREME Graphics I get 62 Average OverAll FPS. MAX Cpu temp I got is 45Degrees Celsius, I am looking forward to 4.8Ghz , What I mean is , Yes I got a little bit FPS improvement, Also tested WOT Max Graphics Vsync On never drops to 59.9FPS, 60FPS Constantly, Vsync off I get 62 to 70 Fps, With VSync on I will get 53 FPS on big cities or detailed maps. I am glad I could do this, From now on no bluescreens or anything like that, I will post more if I successfully get 4.8Ghz or maybe even More....
