Hello all, I need a new PC to replace my six years old museum piece and I'd like to get some advice. I came up with the following build, which seems the best I can get for my not too extravagant budget:

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX
Memory: Kingston Savage 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
PSU: Seasonic S12II Bronze 620W

For the graphics card, I was set on an ASUS GTX960 STRIX. Checking hardware sites yesterday, I found a good deal for a Sapphire R9 280x tri-x OC, bringing it down from way above my budget to around the same price as the 960. From what benchmarks I've seen, the R9 is more powerful, but Sapphire claim it requires a 750W PSU. Since I don't plan to OC, can the 620W PSU handle the R9 280x, or should I stick with the 960? Any other alternatives I should be looking at?

Your system will probably be able to run idle and perform basic tasks. Once the gpu starts drawing power you will likely notice poor performance, or better yet, you'll trip the PSU. The manufacturer's wattage recommendation is a good minimum for that card.

That's what I thought too. I keep hearing that the 750W requirement is exaggerated and people claim 600-650W is enough, but I suppose they're thinking of non factory OC versions of the card or not taking the CPU into account.

Thanks for the answer, I'll stick to my initial plan and get the 960, unless anyone has a different opinion.
