Alright so I have an EVGA 460 GTX stable at 850/1700/2000 with stock voltage at 1.000v. I run benchmarks such as OC Scanner, Furmark, and Heaven 4.0 with no problems, they all successfully pass. However, when I try to get into a game (for example, BioShock Infinite, Black Ops 2, and Aliens vs. Predator) I run them on the highest settings but at only 1440x900 resolution but the games always crash within a few minutes. Can anyone explain this? MY GPU is put under full load during benchmarks and passes them with flying colors but can't play games? I'm rather confused by this. Please note that this also happens when I am running at stock clock speeds of 720/1440/1800, same problem. I don't think my card is fried because I'm still able to run all of these benchmarks at the highest possible settings (Heaven 4.0 being the most intensive, but everything displays properly and nothing artifacts)

Any ideas? I'm just lost.

Also, I'm running on nvidia drivers 320.18, I rolled down to 314.22 last night and then upgraded to 320.18 again today, I had the same problem for both.

My specs are as follows

1 - EVGA 460 GTX FPB (Free performance boost model) GDDR5 768 mb

Solution

Not really, you can use MSI Afterburner too.

Try the sound thing, if that doesn't work rise the voltage to 1.1V and test.
Do you have the same problem with the older driver?

There are numerous complaints online about the 320.18 driver right now causing crashes and such.

I haven't had crashes with that driver but I did have graphic errors playing Battlefield 3 last night (concrete textures replaced with American Flags for example. Quite odd).

Battlefield wants to show you freedom

I'm getting the same issue with 314.22 and 320.18. I'm considering going back to an old 296 driver, it's not like they optimize 4 series fermi cards anymore anyways.

Is using Precision necessary? I'm currently using MSI Afterburner and I DID mess with the voltage originally when I set it to 850 core. I raised the voltage to 1.025, just a very tiny amount to give it some head room at that clock. I thought that may have been the problem but it still does it either way. A good computer buddy of mine said that on-board sound could be the issue so I have disabled it in the bios and am going to test it

Solution

Are you sure I should raise it that high? I was told the max safe voltage for the EVGA 460 was 1.087v? I tried the sound thing and no luck, however it did crash in Deus Ex in Dx11 again and whenever a game crashes it resets the card to stock clocks of 720/1440/1800. The game ran fine after this but the overclock has proved very stable in all of my benchmarks with zero crashing? I ran furmark on the most intensive settings and it ran for 2 hours with no problems, never peaking above 65c temp. I did some research that said the 460 had weird issues with resetting after 799mhz? What's up with that?

Not really.

In fact, EVGA GTX 570 had the same problem, the solution was rise the voltage or downclock the GPU. You can select the best option for you.

Interesting, I might just try that then. Well, the REALLY weird thing is I just ran Furmark on max on one monitor, and Heaven 4.0 on my primary, both running at the same time with heaven on max dx11 as well. They ran for 7 minutes before I myself closed them as I can't even get my games to run longer than 2 minutes. They ran flawlessly, I'm not sure what's going on here. :??:

I've tried setting the cards voltage to 1.1v and it won't allow me to go past 1.087v. Can I fix that?

Entirely, as far as I know, I can try updating it again but I see no reason why it isn't. *Edit* I ran the web installer and it said nothing needs to be updated.

It was the overclock being the issue. ANYTHING over 799mhz causes it to crash, even if it runs benchmarks fine. I really don't know what the problem is. Saint19 said I either have to up the voltage to 1.1v or downclock it. I've downclocked it to 799mhz and it's running fine now. Is there a way I can get past that mark? I had it stable even at 900mhz, but it only crashes in certain games. Every OC I've applied to the card is perfectly stable in every benchmark I run. I just don't understand why it's an issue for my games. Is there something I can do to to get higher? It's locked the voltage at 1.087v, won't allow me any higher.

Overclocking is partly about chance. Not every card or CPU is entirely stable at the same overclock. Some of it is simply luck of the draw. For example, I installed my i5-750 CPU when I bought it and within 10 minutes had it stable @ 4GHz (stock is 2.66GHz). I just got lucky and it's been fine ever since.

Some people have the exact same version of this card (EVGA 460 GTX 768mb NON-V2) running at 950mhz at 1.1v. What I need to know is what the latest BIOS version is and how to flash it. BIOS version is currently at 70.04.1B.00.60, is this the latest or an older?

Well, I finally gathered the balls to raise the voltage cap! It was a surprisingly easy process too, I was expecting way more. Anyways, my problem is now entirely fixed! I even managed to clock the card all the way up to 900/1800/1950 and it sits chilly at 54c (on AIR) while playing games maxed out on dx11!! (I'm being careful with the memory since my 460 doesn't have heatshrinks there, plus I've been told it doesn't do much anyways) Thanks man! I don't know if this voltage trick did the job by itself, but there were like 50 something windows updates that I was unaware of, AND I rolled back to 296.10 WHQL drivers. Hasn't crashed since! I'm actually able to play my games now! 😀 Thanks again!

PS: Totally staying away from 3xx series drivers, nvidia is doing a pretty rough job as of recent.

Excellent, I'm glad that your problem is fixed now. Enjoy your rig and gaming 😉
