Need Help reinstalling Windows 98 after reformat

I have a old computer that I want to try to clean up a bit and give to my mom so that she can play around on it. Send emails, word processing, and perhaps some webserfing.

It is an emachine emonster 550. P3 550mhz. The full system specs are below.

I made a windows boot floppy and then reformatted. The boot floppy seems to work fine. Once I get to the A: prompt. I switch to D: and then try to run setup from the computers restore CD. It gives me the error message you cannot run this program while in MS-DOS mode.

Booting directly from the CD without the floppy doesn't work either.

Any suggestions?

I have added a bit of ram, network card, and a 32mb video card.

Just out of curiosity, what are you typing when you attempt to start up the CD drive when using the boot floppy? is it something like [CD Drive Letter]:\setup.exe?

I think there is something wrong with the boot up disk. Try creating another one which can load the driver for your CD.

Is the disc you're trying to install from a regular OS disc or is it a manufacturer's Restore disc. If it's the latter then it's probably meant to be started from within Windows itself; hence the error message.
