Need help removing cvtres.exe

Hi

My pc currently runs on 99% CPU.

My resource manager shows that 70-80% CPU is use by cvtres.exe

I'm new to PC but I am pretty sure that something is wrong here.

Please help

Interesting. I'd run virus/malware scans. Is this a new install of windows? Also run a hijackthis scan and post the results (preferably in a spoiler tag).

I already run a full scan on Microsoft security essential but did not get anything.

What do you you mean a new install?

I tried installing Hijackthis.

I keep getting windows cannot find everytime I try to open the program

It is not a virus it is required for a program, an official microsoft program, if you'd likr to remove it open your task manager by right clicking your taskbar(the bar at the bottom of your screen) and click task managee, and then click once cvtres.exe and hit the "del" button or click end task at the bottom right of the program's screen.

I was thinking it was more along the lines of a bitcoin/litecoin mining virus. Viruses can call themselves whatever they like.

@OP download malwarebytes, install it, update it, then run malwarebytes and microsoft security essentials in safemode. (assuming you haven't already done so.)

I actually tried doing that, but for some reason Its not on the processes only see it in resource manager.

Also found a new problem. every program I try to install will not open.
I get a 'windows cannot find 'path'. make sure you type the name correctly and try again'.

I tried to install malwarebyte and hijackthis

Hmm, try downloading and installing them in safemode. You can also try running kasperskys rescue cd (assuming you have a burner and a blank dvd/usb handy)

Ok I just run it on safe mode but still the same message.

No do I have to do a system reboot?

Before rebooting out of safe mode, run a SFC /scannow from command prompt.

But my microsoft security essential stop working.
It says app service stop. when i click on start now button it just says service cannot restarted. access denied

Ok SFC finish did not find any integrity violation

Probably not legitimate based on your description. Download a decent security software (MalwareBytes is a good one); it should pick it up. MSE is crap.

MSE is alright. Its alot better than it once was I'll tell yah that much. Personally I use Avira but it does have some minor popups in the bottom corner. It doesn't do it while you're doing things, just when you've been idle for a while. Wouldn't recommend it to everyone for that reason though. You can pay to get rid of the popups but I'm a cheap bastard.

@OP Hmm, I'm kind of running out of ideas. Since things are refusing to install maybe the supposed virus turned off one of the essential services? Start>run> type services.msc > enter > sort by startup type, screen shot the disabled ones, sort by status, screenshot disabled > upload to imgur please.

Yeah some programs stop working.
My system restore wont work too.

And I just remember this started happening a few weeks back when I uninstalled some programs.
Something called Microsoft visual 2005 or something. there were a lot of them from different years so I remove the old ones.
There wasnt any problem then so I just left it out.

Alright, just so other people know what I've tried and found out:

Can't install anything because of "path not available". Even in safemode.
System restore doesn't work.
SFC showed nothing wrong.
MSE is disabled and can't be reenabled.

So based on all that I'd try the kaspersky rescue disk and I think Hirens Boot CD has a malwarebytes rescue disk on it. Even if it doesn't its a good disk to have around anyways. You could also try a "repair install" of windows. Though since SFC found nothing I doubt that would help much. And I'd wait till the very last option to do something like that.

Also to add to that everytime I try to download anything I get a anti virus software scan failed, and stop my download

What did you fix and how, that'd likely give me some clues to whats causing this and how to solve the remaining problems.

Good all return to factory settings.
and so far I havnt seen cvtres.exe
Im waiting for the updates to finish.
I will post again once Im done

Ok

It seems restoring to factory settings fix it.

Whatever that cvtres.exe was its gone now and my cpu is running good no more 99% usage.

Yeah doing the factory reset is basically the same as reformatting and reinstalling windows.

By the way, keep in mind that you may get the process back if you install Microsoft Resource File To COFF Object Conversion Utility, which belongs to software Microsoft Visual Studio .NET or Microsoft Visual Studio so avoid downloading that unless you want the process to be back or really need the program

Not sure, I don't really know why you personally would need it but if you do you'll know.

Also it was likely just a virus. Theres no reason it should have been using as many resources as it was. Not to mention the whole "can't install or virus scan" bit.
