Need Help Setting Up Access Point

So, I have a Netgear CGD24G wired/wireless router downstairs that is the main network for the house. Upstairs I have a desktop computer using a wireless usb adapter to connect to that network. I just bought a Netgear WN802T Access Point. I want to put this access point upstairs and connect it directly to the desktop with an ethernet cable. I'm a noob with all this networking stuff, so tell me, can a setup like this work? Can the access point connect to the main network without being directly plugged into the router? And if my desktop is plugged into the access point will I be able to connect to the internet?

Yes; you can connect a router to a router. And if you connect an Ethernet cable to either router, you should be connected to the Internet. Keyword being "should". If all goes well, it will work. If not, well ... fix it.

Do you know how I do this? Here is the instruction manual to the access point, but I don't understand.

You just connect an Ethernet cable into both LAN ports. You'll also want to make sure that your AP has the same settings as your main router, and also disable DHCP on it. Also change the AP's IP so it doesn't have the same IP as the main router or they'll fight over it. You may also have to set its mode to Router.
