Hello all!

i was hoping someone could help me out. I'm primarily a console streamer but been recently moving to PC. I find that when I stream PC games (eg R6 siege, Overwatch, etc) the games are so laggy and skip quite a bit. To the point where i can't even play... What I've had to do is stream at 720p with graphic settings all set to low AND have vsync on just to be able to play... Is it my processor holding me back? Should I upgrade to the i7-6700K? I stream 4-5 times a week for about 4 hours at a time.

My current build:
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 612 Ver.2 44.2

Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2666

SSD: Samsung 950 PRO 256GB M.2-2280

Video card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB SC Gaming ACX 3.0

Power supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX

thanks for the help

Solution
Your issue is with the processor. Having only 4 physical cores and no hyperthreading, the four cores are trying to split the four cores work load of gaming, while ALSO trying to stream using the same 4 cores.

I used to have an i5-4690K OC'd to 4.7GHz, and it lagged too. I recently upgraded to a six-core i7-6800K on the X99 platform with 32gb of RAM and the difference is HUGE. Having two extra cores to take the brunt of the streaming, while also having your four cores to be used for gaming makes it so much smoother. (not to mention the hyperthreading keeps everything buttery smooth)

I was streaming at 720p 30fps from my i5 and it still stuttered like crazy. Now with the 6800k and some careful tweaking in OBS Studio, I can hit 1440p...

I was streaming at 720p 30fps from my i5 and it still stuttered like crazy. Now with the 6800k and some careful tweaking in OBS Studio, I can hit 1440p (my native resolution) 60fps absolutely no problem. I stream games such as Rainbow Six: Siege, Battlefield 1, GTA V and more.

If you're looking to make big improvements for minimal cost, try to upgrade the processor, yeah, but here are some reasons why I switched to X99 instead of the 7700K and Z270:

Reason one: I'm NEVER going to use any of the new features the 7700k has 'brought to the table.'

Reason two: Games are starting to benefit from higher core counts. Battlefield 1 (My time-killer atm) has actually seen a slight improvement after i went from a 4.7ghz 4-core to a 4.2ghz 6-core, 12 thread CPU, ESPECIALLY when I'm running multiple programs at once. Yeah higher clocks would be great, but when you've got two extra cores to leverage for streaming and 4 to use for gaming, it's a freakin' no brainer.

Reason 3: GPU-accelerated streaming services like ShadowPlay and ReLive are VERY limited in customization... I use OBS Studio and can stream at a solid 1080p 60fps no problem at about 10,000kbps. (I've got 300mbps down, 50mbps up internet if that changes anything) You couldn't do that with a 7700k without taking a frame hit, I guarantee you. On average I go from about 80-90fps at 1440p (Ultra + FXAA + HBAO) to about 75-85fps in BF1 when comparing not streaming to streaming.

Reason 4: Quad channel memory. I've got no real data to back this up, as I went from 16gb to 32gb, but based on theory having two more channels for RAM should speed up multi-tasking and multi-program rendering a bit.

Reason 5: YOLO. Seriously. Ever since I started the whole computer thing I wanted a true enthusiast grade backbone to my system that would stay relevant for years to come.

I also do lots of video editing, CAD modelling, CAD rendering and more stuff that really uses the ability to add more RAM and use more cores to their fullest potential as well, so moving to the 6800k was an easy choice for me.
