Hey guys. I am working on getting together a new set of hardware for my sisters gaming computer. She currently has an Athlon X4 860k in her build, and she was hoping to switch to an Intel 6500. I was hoping that you would be able to assist me in making sure this will go over correctly. This is a link to her build:

I'm working on figuring out the parts to replace it with. We were going to get the 6500, switch out the current RAM for 2x4 GB DDR4 due to incompatibility issues, and I'm still looking into what motherboard to get. I have seen conflicting information on having to get a new copy of Windows. I have never done a switch like this before, so any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi

If a oem windows you will need to buy a new copy as it is tied to the motherboard
If a retail version you can transfer to new pc

A clean install of Windows is recommend
(unless motherboard uses same chipset as previous motherboard which does not apply in this case)

( only exception to moving windows oem to another pc applies to windows 8 oem which was not provided by pc manufacturer)
Win 8.1 changed back to not being transferable

The disk I bought was marked OEM, so I guess I am out of luck?

The new hardware we are looking at is as follows. Let me know if it looks ok please.

Yep, AFAIK you'll need a new Windows license, Microsoft became a lot tighter on transfers after Win 7.

What sort of budget do you/she have?

Bear in mind that most 'H' and 'B' chipsets don't support memory faster than DDR4 2133.

What type of games does your sister play? Some will prefer a big i5 6500 with its four full cores, many will be happy with a far cheaper i3.

If you keep the existing HDD, it'll be a very good idea to do a full format and fresh install of everything, so grab a half decent USB flash drive to save her files to and also use it to download and save out the latest drivers for the system as well. That way when you do the Windows install, you'll have all the updated drivers and files on hand for a smooth transition.

She plays a pretty big mix of games. From Fallout 4 and games like Skyrim to MMORPGS. She is also absolutely stuck on the I5 6500. The RAM I am looking at for her is DDR4 2133 exactly. I just got off of a support chat with a Microsoft representative and and they told me that I should be able to reuse the product key, and if I had problems with it to contact them back. I am not absolutely certain of how trustworthy the service chat is though. I was planning on doing a complete wipe of her current hard drive for the sake of a better running system as well. I am not certain on her budget though, as she is paying on it mostly, and I just plan on buying her the motherboard to go with the upgrade as a Christmas present. I'll be doing the physical switchout anyways lol.
