Hi, so I just want to say I know a decent amount about computers, but not too sure about building computers so sorry if I seem slightly retarded.

Lately my pc has been having some problems, HDMI slot being dodgy, headphone slot stopped working, USBs/mic slot on the front of my PC have not worked in a while and a few other things, and I would like to get it fixed. I just have no idea what I need to buy, could anyone point me in the right direction?

Fairly sure it has something to do with the motherboard right? I'm fairly sure the one I have now is called Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard, if I replace the one I have now with a new one, will the USB/HDMI etc work again?

Another question, probably stupid, does every motherboard fit into every case? Cases have different USB slots in different places, I don't understand how they all fit together, confusing 😛.

Also speaking of cases, I would like to get a new one, mine looks a bit ugly now, time for a change. I would like one like this http://i.imgur.com/fZfHhfs.jpg or this http://i.imgur.com/V7oX9aN.jpg with the panel on the side, although not too fond of ones with a lot of LED. The on I have now is Antec 302 Three Hundred Two Ultimate Gaming Case. Does anyone have any recommendations? Not sure how to pick one, if it'll be too big/small etc.

Another thing is RAM, have 4GB atm, but been tempted to upgrade for a while, and with CODGhosts requiring 6GB I'm going to upgrade. Seems cheap enough anyway. How do I know what RAM will work with my PC? I only want 8gb atm but option to get more in the future.
Think thats it, sorry for all the text, hopefully someone can help.

1.It quite possibly is your mobo. What CPU are you using?

2. Look at the mobo form factor.ATX,mATX and the sort.Your current board is an ATX board. You should be looking at mid ATX cases at the very least for these form factors

3.The NZXT Phantom 410 is pretty sweet.

4.8gb is the standard these days. What kind of ram you have? As in is it a single 4gb stick or 2x 2gb sticks. If it's a single, just get another 4gb stick and slot it in.
There's nothing wrong in having 4x 2gb sticks,it'll just look odd, that's it. But if you want to upgrade your ram in the future, get a 2x 4gb setup now

1. i5-2500k

2. Ok thanks, that makes sense.

3. hmm looks ok, think I'd prefer a simpler one, looking a bit odd at the top.

4. Yeah I think I have 2x 2gb atm, I'll just buy 2x 4gb and replace them though. What sort of ram should I buy? Will all work? I'm not sure.

+1 It's the best selling and best rated 1155 for many reasons, great mobo 😉

hm think I'd rather stick with the one I have now and just replace it. Not too sure about changing things and I'm perfectly happy with what I have now. Could someone link me to ram that would work with the motherboard I first mentioned? Not really sure what I'm looking for. Preferably on Amazon.co.uk too. Can't buy from newegg.

Quad channel - 4 sticks(4x 4gb)
Dual channel - 2 sticks(2x 2gb)
Single - one stick of ram(2gb)

DDR3 is the current standard of RAM type.

You don't really have to note the numbers after PC3,eg DDR3 Dual Channel PC3 12xxx. What you should be looking at is the number AFTER that. it will usually be 1366mhz,1600mhz,1866mhz or 2400mhz. Some may not mention the term "mhz"

This is the frequency of the RAM.1600Mhz is okay. The performance difference between 1600 and 1866 may not be noticeable in games(a few fps, give or take).Sometimes the price difference between the two does not justify those few extra frames. But it will be your call.
Try looking for corsair, gskill or kingston ram

Get dual channel (2x 4gb) 1600mhz. That's great for many people. The higher frequencies are usually favoured by people who tweak with the computer settings to get the maximum juice out of their machines.

I hope that helps.

Just to clarify, you are on the 1155 socket mobos, so it's single or dual channel period, even with 4 sticks it's still dual channel, the only Intel mobos that run quad channel are the 2011 socket mobos...and for best DRAM performance you want at least 2 sticks to use dual channel which can provide up to a 10-15% DRAM performance increase....want 2x2GB for 4, 2x4GB for 8 or 2x8GB for 16GB the only time you really want touse all for slots ifs if you want to run 32GB, using 4x4GB to have 16GB is more stress on the MC (memory controller) than a 2x8GB set for 16GB

Would these work together? Are they okay? Plan to order tomorrow afternoon so kinda in a hurry to find things 😀

Java:

hm ok that makes more sense. So it would be a bad idea for me to order 2x4GB now, then another 2x4GB in a few months or so? It would be better for me to just dump the 2x4GB and Buy 2x8GB?. Also I noticed that there seems to be a few 1x8GB sticks, what are the downsides/upsides to using them over 2x4GB?

Also how easy is it to install RAM? This is the first time I would have done something like this, bought my PC prebuild so I'm kinda scared >_< Anything I should do before? I looked at a few guides and it seems you just place it in to the slot and push down? Anything to do after that? Install/update anything on my PC?

I'd go w/ the 2x8GB, getting a 8GB stick and then adding another can be prblematic, even if the same exact model + if 1600 or better XMP won't work as it's programmed by the packaged stick/set for that number of sticks...Yes on the install, line up the notch on the stick with the slot and insert, and push in till the end clips lock themselves in...then if 1600 or better go into the BIOS and in the advanced or tweaker page, enable XMP select profile 1 and should be good to go :) if any problems just give a shout or feel free to PM me 😉
