How can I be able to play movies on my HDMI connected TV with the sound coming out of my surround speakers and be able to listen to whatever else (audio-books, video games) from a head set? I want to be be able to control the volume of each independently. But I'm running into issues getting it right. Hopefully some one can tell me what i can do.

Here is my set up: I have an MSI GT70. The on-board audio is RealTek HD audio. I have a Creative X-Fi Surround 5.1 USB sound card plugged in. I also have a TV hooked up with HDMI to the laptop. I want to avoid using the TV's speakers for movies because the sound distorts. The surround sound is hooked up to the USB sound card. I have the headphones connected to the on-board jack. The sound from the headphones is fine. When I play movies on my VLC player I select the USB sound card as the playback. But all I can hear is the sound from the subwoofer. If i plug the headphone into the jack on the USB card i can hear things. When i try and open the Creative SB control panel it says the wrong device is installed for this software. Any suggestions?

Solution
Try in VLC Player options to find and select output devices and select the Creative x-Fi sound card.

In windows you can select the playback devices and set them to be the default. Check this in Sound options (right click on the speaker icon on taskbar.

Good luck!

(sorry for my english, I'm trying my best :) )
