Need help with boot from usb hard drive

Hi I have 2 computers that I need to format and reinstall windows as I am locked out of them. I have a password recovery tool and and version of windows 7 on my usb hard drive but when I try to boot from the usb hard drive, the computer does nothing. It is not recognize the files or something. I do not have a cd drive on these computers

You need to set the PC to boot from the USB, IF it has the option in the Bios.

that is what I am saying..I have done that..I got to bios and select usb and it even says my hd 's name

Sometimes it will only work from one USB slot, but not others. I have seen this before where one seems to be set as a primary, I believe as the main USB is 2.0 while the others are 1.0.

This is something I have had happen before and I am making assumptions here as to the Why but its worth trying it on a different USB socket if you have not already.

Failing that I would suggest your next course of action be to get an external HD enclosure.
