What games are you planning to play? And at what resolution? seems your talking single monitor so is that 1080p or do you want to spend around $600 for a 1440p monitor?
Do you need to buy an OS?
Location?

For $3000 you can build a serious system, but if your just gaming at 1080p you can build a very strong system for 1/2 of that.

Add a keyboard and mouse of your choice to this and you'll be in great shape.

Notes:
The Zalman CPU cooler is what I use and I love it, works great and looks awesome but the Hyper 212 EVO is very popular, does a great job with OC'ing.

I built this list a while back as an all-purpose gaming desktop that can handle just about anything. It's very similar to the system I built that I'm using, just better graphics and more geared towards gaming and OC'ing compared to mine. Coming in at $1880, plenty of room for any upgrades or other parts you might want.

Try this. Unlocked i7 with 16gb of LP ram for your video editing needs. I went with a good bang for buck air cooler if you want to push higher OC go with the Noctua NH-D14. For secondary storage you can choose the lower power and cheaper WD Green, I like the 5 year warranty of the WD Black. I generally prefer nVidia but at 1440p I think the extra VRAM of the 7970 will be beneficial especially if your going to run a bunch of Skyrim addons. That being said a 4GB 680 would fit into your budget or even a 690. Case is personal preference, the PSU is modular and leaves you headroom should you decide to run dual GPUs in the future. You can choose your own mouse/keyboard.
