I'm planning a new build ($1,800) in the next month. But i'm too confused to choose a proper cpu. I already got my graphics card, it's a ASUS AMD 7950. In case of cpu and motherboards, I've narrowed my choices down to a LGA 1150 Z87 Asus Maximus Hero with the 4770k, and the Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 LGA 2011 and the i7-4820K. I don't know very much about cpu, sockets & chipsets. Is there any advantage in sticking with LGA 2011 over LGA 1150?

Solution
Hey,

In short if you are gaming I would go with socket 1150 as it has the latest features and optimizations, also the IPC on the 4th Gen i7's is higher. If you are doing workstation style work and require a hex core then socket 2011 makes sense. However overall socket 2011 lacks some of the newer feature present in socket 1150, and the CPU's are 3rd gen so they have a lower IPC. Also Z87 is fine if you are doing Dual CrossFire or SLI. If you plan on running quad SLI than X79 might be beneficial. The i7 4770k is overall better than the 4820k, although the 4820k generally overclocks higher. If you plan on overclocking to the max then the 4820k might hit higher clocks, but keep in mind that each chip is different.

Well I'm making it...

Well I'm making it easier for you -
Do you play around in CAD?
Do you need to encode video regularly and/or wish to stream your gameplay?
Do you fool around in photoshop /and/or other apps/ and get paid for doing so?
Do you use mostly heavy threaded apps?
Do you like to virtualize and test many things OS/network/whatever?

1 point for every yes:
4-5 pts - LGA 2011
2-3 pts - LGA 1150 + i7
0-1 pts - LGA 1150 + i5

Now the choice is yours :)

Solution
Yeah. i5 is the best cpu for peoples like us who uses their systems mostly for gaming. Go with 4670k and no need to choose the hero mobo. You will not get any extra performance with costlier mobos. I'll suggest a ASUS Z87 PRO. It's a tomshardware smart buy and anandtech bang for the Bucks award winning gear. You don't need a hero 😀 save the money for your next buy.
