Hi guys relatively new here, not sure where to post topics such as these but anyway I got a few concerns about my planned build. I'm looking to set up a PC for the initial purpose of video editing running programs such as Premiere Pro, After Effects, Sony Vegas Pro, and the like. I'm thinking of going for the i5 3470 for my processor or probably the amd fx 8350 (if i can find one at my local stores). As for the motherboard, I'm not really sure if I should go for the msi h77 g43 since I don't know if it's compatible with the fx 8350 and if it has FireWire (is this really important btw). For ram, I'm thinking of going for gskill 1600 mhz 16gb 2x8 which goes for about $150 at my local stores. Should I decide to go with this build, what HDD, SSD, and GPU would u guys recommend? and if I go for 2 SSDs, would I still need to get an HDD? PS I'm not at all tech savvy so please, if it's not too much of a hassle, keep all the tech talk simple, yeah? Thanks :)

Solution
It depends on your needs and budget. An SSD will improve loading times for whatever is sotred in them, because of the high price is a common practice to pair a "cheap" SSD to install the OS and leave the HDD(s) for all the other files such as pictures, movie clips and software.

This mobo has both Am3+ and Firewire support and its quite cheap too :) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131874 (Please verify at ASUS website)

On the GPU part I'm not well informed but between the i5 and fx8350 the latter will give you slightly better performance.

Hope I helped.

Well, the first question is; do you have any issues buying online? What is your location as well. For the two Cpu choices you listed, the 8350 would be the better option, but it IS NOT compatible with that motherboard. You listed a Mb with an Intel chipset.

You'll also need to give us a budget to better help you out.

When it comes to an AMD build I tend to be a tad partial to Gigabyte Motherboards. In this case it would be the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 as seen HERE.

It also has Firewire 1394a support.

HDD: Storage Drive 1TB WD Caviar Black 7,200RPM
SSD: OS Drive 128GB Samsung 840 Pro or 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 or XT 2GB Graphics Card

Most of those editing apps have gone or are in the midst of going OpenCL. I know Adobe has announced that CS7 will be OpenCL and no longer CUDA based. Sony already uses OpenCL. It just so happens that when it comes to OpenCL drivers... AMD are the current kings.

So, do you mean to say if I get 2 SSDs I still need to get an HDD? I'm confused though... if the HDD is for picture and video files and software then what do I store in the SSD then?

Yes, I've tried ordering a couple of things from eBay but they never seem to get through. I'm from the Philippines namely Cebu. My budget would be around $700-$1000 at the most.

The SSD is used for your operating system and maybe your most important games and applications. The rest you dump onto the HDD.

This setup is actually what my friend also recommends and I don't see a problem with it either. Although, I still need to read up on graphic cards. Can you tell me how fast this setup renders 720p or 1080p videos on programs like After Effects or Adobe Premiere?

Thanks! But what are 2 SSDs for then? Just for more storage?

It is hard to say exactly because no two workloads are the same.

Info on PremierePro going OpenCL HERE.
