Need help with error message

Hello,
When I try to open pictures in my documents I get an error message: Windows explorer has encountered a problem and mus close. Sorry for the inconvenience.

What program tries to run when you open up the pictures?

Nothing tries to run that I can tell. Nothing happens.
Since I posted the question, I did get it to open a folder one time but then it went back to not opening.
