Need Help with iMac as Monitor

I have the 21.5 inch late 2009 model iMac. i want to use it as a monitor for my windows desktop while i wait for my new monitor. i have a Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter that i plug into the mac and then plug the HDMI cable into the socket on the adapter. I press CMD F2 on the mac and nothing happens. i have also gone to my keyboard preferences and looked at the settings and everything is fine. when i press fn F2 my mouse goes missing until i click somewhere then it re appears .

Please Help
