Need help with a router issue. I just bought the nvidia shield and it seems the default router that came with AT&T uverse isn't good enough to allow streaming from pc to shield. My question is do I just buy a better router and use it with the 2wire or how do I go about making pc streaming work. I've got all the other requirements covered. It's just the wireless. I guess I don't fully understand how routers work.

Solution
Here's the main support page: http://shield.nvidia.com/faq/

Assuming you have a wireless "N" version of 2wire which is likely, I see no reason it should not work at all. You may get better results with a better router/gateway though.

Your Wi-Fi network is just sending a video stream from your PC (and sending button commands back). That's similar to watching NETFLIX except it's just sent locally from your PC not some server somewhere.

Wi-Fi bandwidth varies by distance and other factors, but my 2Wire got 2MB/second two floors away. My new router gets 7MB/second (limited by cheap USB receiver).

In contrast, Netflix has 3GB per hour as the best quality (in Canada) which averages 1MB/second (1080p HD quality). There's just no good...
It's the WIRELESS portion you are concerned with.

There are two ways to setup a home network with hardware:

1) MODEM + ROUTER
2) GATEWAY device (contains the MODEM and the Router)

The 2wire is probably the 2nd device. Since it's the Router portion you are replacing my advice is to get a completely new device that contains the MODEM and ROUTER which also has good wi-fi.

In theory, you can attach a Router to a Gateway device but you can have problems with this.

The Shield uses "N" wi-fi. The latest routers support the new "ac" standard but the Shield won't use that. While "ac" routers are backwards compatible they are also not as tested (customer reviews) and more expensive.

*Thus, my advice is get a SINGLE device to replace your Gateway. They are often called ROUTERS as well despite containing the MODEM so be careful.

I'll look for an example to recommend.

I couldn't find any good Gateway devices.

I bought this DSL MODEM after much research:

This ROUTER seems pretty good. You should get one with 300mbps or better wi-fi capability. There might be a better one but there are many crappy ones:

2WIRE:
I don't know what your issue is with getting it to work. I'm surprised it doesn't. If it's a wi-fi bandwidth issue, try testing in the SAME ROOM as the 2Wire to see if that works.

If it's another issue perhaps you didn't set things up correctly such as:
- have a WPA2 or other security setting set on the 2Wire that the Shield doesn't support
- other setup issue with Shield device

I don't know what model you have, but again most wi-fi routers should work.

These are the routers that Nvidia officially endorses as compatible with 1080p game streaming on the Shield.

Though from what I understand of its requirements, any dual wireless band (5Ghz and 2.4Ghz) router should work.

Good luck.

Solution
The 2wire model is 3801hgv if that helps. Ya idk what could be wrong. We have very fast internet but for some reason my pc doesn't even show up to try to stream. I wish I had other routers nearby to test out but your probably right that it's something wrong with 2wire. Does anyone know how to edit router setting or maybe update firmware to try to get it recognizing the shield?

2wire is pretty old modem that att used.
why dont you just contact ATT and ask for a new modem?
---
2wire has both the router and modem function within it. and typically any modem you will receive from att will have both the router and modem function.
----
you can change the modem to act as a bridge and connect a new router by setting the public mode OFF.
but it gets complicated unless you are aware, so ask for a new modem. (say that modem has power issues or something)
ask for the motorola or the netgear modem. those are the new ones
let me know

They actually just replaced my router a couple weeks ago. It was that grey and black large 2wire and they brought out and out in the small black square shaped router. So AT&T should have those other brands of routers if I ask?

Also I have this linksys wireless N gaming adaptor model number: wga600n. Problem is I can't seem to get it to work when going through the setup disk. Is there something I'd have to do to the 2wire router first cause if I can get it to work it might solve my problem.
