need help with "shadows" on my monitor

I have encountered a very annoying problem with my computer. On my monitor, there are horizontal "shadows" of dark areas of the screen. As an example, look at this Tomshardware page. See the black navigation bars on the left? (Overview, search, profile, etc) Each of those casts a dark (but still see-through) stripe across my screen. However, the yellowish section under the "Welcome" header doesn't cast much of a shadow at all (because there isn't many dark pixels).

I have ruled out the Monitor as the source of the problem, as I have tried 3 different ones and all have the same effect. So I figure it's either the video card or something funny with my AGP slot. I have an Athlon 700 on a Soyo mobo (4x AGP), and 32mb 3D Prophet SE (geforce 256 chipset).

I do not think this is a driver problem either, as I can still see the shadows even right after I boot up (on the BIOS screen). I have also taken screenshots in windows and had other people look at them, and they say it looks fine. I have even tried resetting the BIOS and such. As a side note, I decided to peek inside my tower and found that the heatsync/fan wasn't attached to my gfx card cpu at all. It was just dangling (faulty connectors, I managed to get it back on tho). Also, this happened very suddenly. I was playing a game and my monitor flashed and suddenly started doing this stuff. I haven't had any problems for the past year.

So, my question is if the fan not on the cpu is the cause of these "shadows". I put it back on, but a week later the problem is still here. Maybe something fried in my gfx card and I need a new one? Or is there another more likely cause that I'm overlooking? I appreciate any and all help in this matter :)

I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're describing. Since you mentioned taking screenshots, perhaps you could post them somewhere?

You wouldn't happen to be using a monitor extension cable, would you?

I had ghosting problems that wouldn't go away. Then I bought a top quality KVM, with top of the line cables, hooked it up and... no ghosting. Turns out that this isn't at all uncommon with 'cheap' extension cables.

Just a thought.
