Hi all,
A few years ago I bought a medium to lower end gaming laptop (ASUS ROG) which I really loved and it stayed super cool while gaming. I play Elder Scrolls online and World of Tanks mostly.
The issue is that after about 9 months I noticed that if I had more than one program opem (I also do graphic design and use the Adobe software such as Illustrator and Photoshop), or played a game on top settings the screen would dull for a few moments. Suddenly found out that this was because even though I always use my laptop plugged in, it was going to just battery power and was not charging, and I found out because one day it didn't just flicker but stayed like that with the message 'plugged in but not charging'. I had done a security Windows upgrade the day before.
I read how to troubleshoot this and one suggestion was to restore. I did this and it fixed the problem.
I was then way for a year but when I got back it happened again, and this time it wouldn't fix and the only way I got it to work was after the battery completely drained a few hours later it would charge again. I fully charged it up then once again looked for a fix. Tried reinstalling battery drivers etc. but it happened again.
This time I waited and then I could charge it again an hour or so after it drained, so I tried another fix. A hard reset, but I accidentally pressed the power button twice and it ended up going to a blue screen of death and no recovery choices. I tried every scenario, BIOS, safe start and going into the Command Screen. Nothing worked and eventually I had to do a clean install. The computer never worked correctly after that with the internet disconnecting frequently etc. I had contacted ASUS but as it was out of warranty they didn't want to hekp at all, despite this being reported by many ASUS users online and when it happened yet again, this time not wanting to switch on again at all, I gave up on the laptop as I needed something more reliable, but as I was going away I decided to leave it until I got back.
So, now I am looking for a good laptop that has a larger screen, good solid build and will stay on the cooler side while gaming. I do not need it to be portable and would like to get a good sale if possible and still willing to now pay between $2 - 2.5k.
My concern is going out and buying another laptop I love, only to have the same issue. This issue was seen in ASUS AND Dell as far as I know.
Firstly, does anyone know if this issue is still around on newer builds? If it is I am wary of getting another ASUS and even a Dell (I have been looking at Alienware).
Also, I have a habit of looking at negative reviews and many of the computers I have been looking at have their fair share, and although I was looking at some with AMD builds, some comments on these systems being more prone to crashes has put me off.
I would love advice on what are deemed more reliable brands and build options. I would like 32gb ram, either i7, i9 or AMD Ryzen 9 7000 series and either Geforce 4070 or 4080 or the equivalent. I have been lookig at Alienware M18 with the AMD build (bestbuy has a decent one for $2k on sale, ASUS, MSI and HP Omen. I am open to ideas and also known online deals.
Thank you for any advice on cpu and gpu options and whether there are any big issues with certain builds or brands.
